Every year when festive decorations start popping up in Singapore I get nervous – not just because Christmas is speeding our way – it’s because I need to book something for the Chinese New Year holiday, stat. It’s the one time of year when everyone gets four days off, and flights and villas get booked out very, very early for those holidays from Singapore with kids. So here are our tips for what you should book, right now.
Skiing in Korea
Not an obvious one, but if you want a cheap ski destination, combined with a real cultural experience, you must consider Korea. The slopes are great for beginners and the distance from the airport to the slopes is not as bad as other options like Japan. The only thing to keep in mind is you need a ski school that teaches in English otherwise you are going to find yourself becoming a kids ski instructor rather than carving it up on the mountain. We recommend you plan your getaway with our local agent Package Korea, contact [email protected].
Cruising around Flores
If your kids like mantas, dragons, snorkelling and wide-open spaces, Flores is for you. Flores is Indonesia’s ‘next big thing’ according to Lonely Planet. It’s a group of islands to the East of Bali and Lombok. We checked it out vicariously when we chatted with jetsetter Jen Tighe (who, by the way, can also hook you up with a great villa in Bali). This is definitely on our bucket list. Get the full story on how to do a family holiday in the Flores islands – on a boat!
Hanging out in Sri Lanka
I have only been to Sri Lanka once with the kids, and I am super keen to get back there. I’m not sure if it’s the totally chilled vibe, the beautiful scenery or the amazing history of the place – but we are in love with this little pocket of Earth. We stayed at an amazing villa – Halala Kanda – a stunning six-bedroom house in the hills of Weligama on the South Coast. It is a serene oasis – perfect to recharge for four days, but close enough to the beaches and the historic charm of Galle. We will be back.
Beach bumming it in Bali and Phuket
Whether you are a Bali person or a Phuket person (there are only the two), four days on a beach is just perfect with the kids. You have to retreat to a spectacular villa at the end of the day, of course. Our pick of Bali right now is The Cotton House – a stunning seven-bedroom villa in Seminyak. As for Phuket, we are loving The Slate, formerly Indigo Pearl – which is super close to the airport, and has a fab kids’ club – and who doesn’t love a kids club? Stay tuned for our full review on that one.
Hong Kong Weekender
Okay so I haven’t done this one personally, but those that have say Hong Kong with kids is a winner. Whether it’s Disneyland, the hiking, the beaches or The Peak – there are lots of great gems to discover over a long weekend. Make sure you also hire a sitter so you can check out a bit of the Hong Kong nightlife while you are there too. Whoop whoop!
This is probably my number one favourite thing to do, (might be my Aussie roots shining through), but I love getting the kids in the car and hitting the road. There is so much to explore just over the border. My picks are the stunning island of Batu Batu, Malacca, and Penang. Check out our full list of road trips we recommend and take your pick. Don’t have a car? Just hire one for the weekend.
