1. Check out the Goldfish Market

Not all that glitters is gold in Mong Kok – but rather, goldfishes! Tung Choi Street North is popularly referred to as the Goldfish Market, being the go-to place for locals to buy goldfish and other tropical aquatic pets. Kids will be delighted with the many aquariums (there are about 50 shops!) featuring a variety of fishes, as well as pets like giant tortoises and toads. Should you want photos, do keep an eye out for stores that prohibit photography. Be sure to disable your camera flash too, as flash may frighten the animals.
Pro-tip: If you don’t mind the crowd, the best time to visit the Goldfish Market is during the late afternoons or evenings as that’s when the street really comes alive. Otherwise, feel free to head over in the morning!

One of these is Peng Chau, a former industrial island that’s now a buzzing art hub. It’s an open secret that some of the best dishes in Hong Kong are found in private kitchens. These are home-based restaurant-like establishments with fixed menus that operate on a reservation-only basis. Most of the time, menus are set based on the freshest produce and ingredients available. Put those in the hands of the experienced chefs (some of whom have worked in top restaurants) running the private kitchens, and voila, say hello to a home-cooked meal that’s worthy of a Michelin star.
