What is Global Day of Parents? June 1 is a day dedicated to recognising the selfless commitment of parents and caregivers in nurturing and protecting children
You’ve heard of Children’s Day (we even have a public holiday for it!) But have you head of Global Day of Parents? There’s Mother’s Day, and Father’s Day, but this one is for both of us – yes, it’s a day just for parents! On 1 June, 2025, families around the world will observe the United Nations Global Day of Parents. This is a day dedicated to recognising the selfless commitment we make as parents and caregivers in nurturing and protecting our children. It’s the most important, rewarding, exhausting job we’ll ever have, and the UN General Assembly knows this as well. Established in 2012, Global Parents Day is an acknowledgment of the pivotal role parents play in shaping the future of their children and, by extension, society as a whole.
It’s a tough gig, that we can’t really train for, but we’re doing it! We see you, we are you, and we’re all in this together. Here are some ways to take a moment and honour your role as a parent, while starting some beautiful family traditions you just might want to take part in every year!
What is Global Day of Parents? The origin story

The origins of the Global Day of Parents trace back to the 1980’s. The UN began focusing on family-related issues, recognising the significant impact of parents on their children’s development, which was in turn shaping society. In 1989, the General Assembly declared 1994 as the International Year of the Family, to bring focus to the importance the family unit plays in our world. In 1993, the UN designated 15 May as the International Day of Families. Building upon this foundation, 1 June was officially proclaimed as the Global Day of Parents in 2012, aiming to honour parents worldwide for their unwavering dedication and sacrifices (and as we know, there are many!)
Reflecting on the role of parents in Singapore and globally
The Global Day of Parents serves as a reminder of the immense responsibility and privilege of parenthood, whether you are a parent yourself or not. It encourages societies as a whole to recognise the challenges parents face and to advocate for policies that support families. This includes important considerations such as parental leave, affordable childcare, and flexible working arrangements.
In Singapore, work-life balance is a rising priority. By celebrating the Global Day of Parents, families can reaffirm their commitment to nurturing the next generation in a loving and supportive environment. It’s also a great reminder of how much work we still need to do as a nation and a society to create a supportive environment for families, and parents.
The 2025 Theme: ‘The Promise of Playful Parenting’

The theme for the 2025 Global Day of Parents is ‘The Promise of Playful Parenting.’ This theme was chosen to highlight the importance of play in our kiddo’s development. But play isn’t just for the kids! As parents, it’s a great reminder that we don’t always have to be the ‘bad cop’, and playful interaction with our kids can foster learning, creativity, and emotional bonding.
How to celebrate Global Day of Parents in Singapore as a family: our favourite heart-bursting ideas
In Singapore, where family values are deeply ingrained in the culture, the Global Day of Parents offers an opportunity to strengthen our family bonds and create lasting memories. Here are some ideas for families to celebrate this special day:
1. Create a Family Time Capsule

I absolutely love this idea! It’s something I’ve always wanted to do with my own family, and never got around to. Why not make today the day? Collect mementos such as photographs, letters, and small keepsakes that represent your family. An old favourite toy from the kiddos, sentimental drawings, or have everyone write their own letter to each other saying three things they love and admire about that person.
Seal the goodies in a box as a ‘time capsule’, to be opened on a future date – perhaps next year’s Global Day of Parents? This could be a brand new family tradition in the making, that could make Global Day of Parents super meaningful every year, while building a collection of mementos from your family’s history.
2. It’s picnic time! Grab some snacks and dine alfresco for some memorable family time

Gather the family for a picnic at one of Singapore’s beautiful parks, such as the Botanic Gardens, East Coast Park or Gardens by the Bay. Pack a basket with everyone’s favourite snacks, bring along some outdoor games, and enjoy quality time together amidst nature. You could also cool off at a water park, always a great way to bring on the giggles!
3. Go on theme, and try some playful parenting

Embrace the theme of “The Promise of Playful Parenting” by participating in activities that promote fun and learning. Visit interactive museums like the Children’s Biennale at the National Gallery or the brand new ACM & ME family friendly space at Asian Civilisations Museum. You could also organise a family game day at home with board games and creative challenges.
4. Volunteer together

Instil values of empathy and community service by volunteering as a family. Participate in local initiatives that support children and families. Ideas could include organising a beach clean up, a charity drive or assisting at community events. This not only strengthens family bonds but also contributes to the well-being of the wider community – and ups the feel good factor!
5. Share your family stories and traditions with your kids
Spend time sharing family stories. The kids may have heard them a thousand times, but family lore is only preserved when it’s shared. Take some time to recount your own childhood memories. Talk about your family’s culture, and upcoming special days. What makes your family special? What traditions do you have that can be passed down through generations, that you hope your kids will carry on? You’ll be surprised how discussions like these can bring you closer together (cue the tears!)
