Not all activewear is created equal when it comes to adapting to a changing pregnant body. We tried and tested some of the most popular maternity activewear brands on the island, and here are our faves...
Being pregnant in the tropics can be extra strenuous. The heat and humidity can amplify what is already a challenging time physically – even going for a walk around the block can feel like running a marathon when it’s 34 degrees, so humid it’s as though you’re showering, and you’re carrying another human in your belly! While there are lots of options out there for pretty maternity fashion, dresses and nursing bras and tops – to beat the heat in Singapore, all we really want when we’re pregnant is to live in cool and stylish activewear. To save you the headache of endless scrolling for the best options, we’ve been busy curating this list of fabulous maternity lines, with stretchy, breathable fabrics – bonus points if it happens to be stylish enough to wear on the school run, to the shops, or for coffee…while also supporting a growing bump or postpartum belly. WHERE TO SHOP FOR MATERNITY ACTIVEWEAR IN SINGAPORE
1. Lorna Jane
One of our all-time favourite activewear brands, Lorna Jane, has us spoiled for choice when it comes to slick and stylish maternity activewear. With beautiful wild prints and classic block colours, we are huge fans of their specifically curated maternity line. You’ll find everything from tights and tops, bike shorts, and even breastfeeding-friendly sports bras, and we are in love with it all! No wonder we want to wear this brand all day every day (pregnant or not).
2. Uniqlo – Lifewear for Her collection
Uniqlo is our go-to for everyday essentials, and their new ‘Lifewear for her’ collections are thoughtfully created for every stage of a woman’s life. They have a maternity collection, and we are loving the super soft seam-free tights that won’t dig into your baby bump, as well as the wire-free bras that offer soft support for tender growing breasts. Uniqlo also have a range of period undies, which might be good to add to your hospital bag for extra protection after birth!
3. Lululemon
Lululemon is always on our radar when it comes to activewear brands, because of the super soft oh-so-stretchy fabrics that are also oh-so-pretty! Even though they don’t have a specifically curated ‘maternity’ line, lots of their fits are worthy of being worn during pregnancy and beyond, especially if you size up. Think buttery soft fabrics that ‘feel like you’re wearing nothing at all’! We recommend the Align tights during pregnancy and take a look at the cross-over design that could give room for a popping belly button (yes, we’ve had experience with that!)
4. Adidas
We are big fans of Adidas maternity activewear, and although there is a limited range online in the Singapore store, you can check out other retailers like ASOS for more. We can vouch for the over-belly tights as being nice and supportive. And who doesn’t love classic black? The bonus of the simple block-colour design is that you can team the tights with fun, brightly coloured tops for multiple outfits – winning!
5. H&M MAMA Collection
For purse-friendly options, definitely check out the H&M MAMA Collection. There are sporty outfits, as well as dresses and nursing tops and other maternity fashion for you to pick from. We want to shout out about their collection of maternity tights, especially if you like over the belly – these are winners! Plus, as well as bike shorts and sports tights, there are some pretty everyday leggings that can take you from a riverside walk to a cafe without looking like you’re off to the gym.
6. Glowco
Muslimahs, rejoice! Glowco and their lovely founder Nawal Alhaddad, who back in 2018 set out to find more activewear options for Muslimahs with new designs for workout-friendly hijabs. Here you’ll find chic, comfy, modest activewear threads, sports non-slip shawls and sports hijabs, as well as other inclusive activewear brands. Although they don’t have a branded ‘maternity’ line, Glowco’s longline tops are flowy and roomy in soft breathable fabrics (perfect for any size tummy!) Added bonus: The Ryla top is breastfeeding-friendly!
7. Vivre Activewear
Vivre Activewear is well known for its material’s high-stretch capabilities, which is of utmost importance in pregnancy activewear! In simple earthy block colours, there’s a small collection of over-the-bump tights and nursing sports bras. However, you could definitely adapt some of their mainline offerings to maternity wear due to their versatile and comfy styles. The co-ord collections will also give you the street-style edge – no frumpy maternity fashion here!
8. Gym Wear Movement
Don’t just take our word for it – a Gym Wear Movement customer has claimed their “Faith maternity tights are so comfortable! The fit is perfect. The belly section goes all the way to the base of my bra and the soft stretchy fabric feels like it will stretch when I expand more. 9. Burd Activewear
We love local, and this homegrown Singaporean brand, Burd Activewear! Made from moisture-wicking fabric, they offer high support and a comfortable feel. Their tights can be adapted for a pregnant belly, as showcased above. The designs are quirky and colourful with assorted show-stopping prints like feathers and purple houndstooth, so you can look as cool as you’ll feel in these babies!
10. ASOS
Ah, ASOS. Our go-to site for shopping the latest trends at prices that don’t have to break the bank. It’s no surprise they carry a wide range of maternity activewear! You’ll find supportive sports bras that also double as nursing bras – yippee! There are different brands, too, like ASOS’s 4505 (a play on the brand name), as well as Reebok, Cotton:On, Mamalicious, and more.
11. Next
Next is always on our list for kids and babies fashion (and the occasional swimming cossie for ourselves, too!) So it’s not surprising they can also deliver stylish maternity sports fits. Find tights from the Next home brand and specially curated maternity activewear lines from Adidas and Reebok. The lines are updated regularly, so you’ll have to check back in to see what’s on offer!
