Coding is a cool skill that kids are learning about in fun ways, and we especially love that girls are succeeding in tech!
Coding has come to Singapore and we’re taking a look at why kids are loving this tech-savvy initiative, what it’s all about, where the cool coding classes are, and why youngsters should be jumping on the app jamming band wagon. And as we’re totally on board with our boys taking a dance class and our daughters kicking-butt at a martial arts lesson, we are also keen to find out more about how we can get our little ladies excited about science and technology from an early age. One thing’s for sure: with lots of great coding courses and workshops for kids all around Singapore, we may well be signing ourselves up too!
What is coding?
It seems the kiddos are one step ahead of us on this score, and we spoke to some awesome kids at the PayPal Girls in Tech workshop, who gave us a quick tutorial. We’ve been told that the easiest way to look at coding is to think of it in terms of Lego… but instead of using Lego bricks to build your masterpiece, you use commands instead, one-by-one. The finished code sequence will then instruct your device how the run the app you’ve created. Simple (ish).
Why do kids need to learn coding?
Long gone are the days when a scientific calculator was the hub of technical wizardry: technology is everywhere! Our kids have never known a world without internet, and the only apples teachers have on their desks these days are the Mac variety. Science and technology are the future, which is why it is so important for our children to soak up as much of that tech-knowledge as they can from an early age – and so that they can teach us! Coding is fun, useful, creative and sometimes even groundbreaking: the all-round package to pique interest in our small humans!
Is coding closing the gender gap within technology?
Traditionally there have always been more men in technology and computer based professions. But the good news is that this is changing, and much of this is down to coding. Girls are great at coding (we have logical brains, right?) and young ladies are really embracing the current coding trend. It’s sparking an interest for all things tech, and the demand amongst girls is so great that ‘girls-only’ coding classes and camps are popping up all over Singapore.
Girls are doing great things in tech – get inspired!
Australian-based, Indian-born nine year old Anvitha Vijay is one such daughter who has already developed a number of highly-praised apps for Apple products. She’s a self-taught coding genius who learnt how to programme using free tutorials on YouTube! She seems to have already secured herself a bright future thanks to coding and has already been invited to Apple’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in San Francisco!
We’ve also discovered a team of six young ladies from Kentucky, USA who have developed an app that could revolutionise Alzheimer and dementia patients’ lives. The middle school-aged girls have created Pharm Alarm, an app that sends reminder messages to patients when it is time to take meds. In the event of the patient forgetting to take action or ignoring the alarm, family members and doctors are immediately alerted. Impressive indeed.
