Frozen the Musical has arrived in Singapore, and it's every bit as jaw dropping and magical as you would expect – and then some!
If you have fans of Queen Elsa and Princess Anna in the house, you’ll already know that Frozen fever is sweeping through Singapore this February. We were lucky enough to be among the first to see this acclaimed hit Broadway musical as it begins its time in Singapore, and we can say that it was absolutely breathtaking. You don’t have to be a fan of the film, or a little one, to enjoy this spectacular musical. The incredible sets! The beautiful actors! The dazzling dancing! And, of course, the singing and the most famous of all the Frozen songs – you really won’t be able to let it go if you don’t grab your tickets to see Frozen the Musical. Here’s why we loved it.
1. The awe-inspiring set design
From the moment you enter the Sands Theatre space, there are sparkles, even on the floor. There are so many great photo opps around the theatre, and that is just a taster of what’s to come inside. Elsa’s powers are enhanced with snow she can summon from her fingertips and the glittering sparkles that light up as she lifts her hands. Little ones will believe she really is magical! The set shifts and changes from inside Anna and Elsa’s castle home, to a town square, to the North Mountain. This is where Elsa builds her palace of ice – and this scene stole the whole show. Thousands of crystals (literally thousands – approximately 55,000!) are lit to sparkle and shimmer, and it is dazzling, something you really need to see for yourself!
2. The incredible costumes
Elsa’s magical dress is adorned with more Swarovski crystals, and her quick change is just. so. awesome. There’s also a jumpsuit addition to her wardrobe, and we are here for it! So much more practical for climbing mountains, and it is equally bedazzled. Anna has her own incredible dress that steals the scene when she is dancing with Hans – there are so many petticoats; it’s a sight to behold!
3. Brilliant performances by the multi-talented cast of Frozen the Musical
An incredible combination of costume design and performance, Olaf is utterly adorable. Matt Lee brings his own sense of cheeky personality to the lovable snowman and his interactions with the sisters. His rendition of ‘Summer’ even features tap dancing! Anna (played by West End star Sarah O’Connor) is equally lovable and sweet, and really funny. Elsa (Jemma Rix / Samm Hagen) is a powerhouse, and the new songs mean we get to see her struggle more clearly. In ‘Monster’, she even contemplates if she should end it all to save everyone from herself, but ultimately chooses to fight to find a solution. Elsa’s vocal talents are a total knockout!
4. Refreshing tale of sisterhood
The story of Frozen resonates on stage just as it does in the films. Anna and Elsa grow up together until Elsa’s powers force them apart. But through it all, Anna never stops selflessly loving and supporting her sister. Cutting ties with the classic Disney rhetoric of finding a handsome prince for a happy-ever-after, seeing strong women on stage journeying through life to find out who they are and who they want to be on their own terms is a great thing. Anna turning away from Kristoff to save Elsa is such a powerful moment, timed brilliantly by all involved, and I definitely had a tear in my eye…
5. The music and the magic that is ‘Let it Go’
I would see this musical again and again for this moment alone. The thousands of crystals shimmering, the costume quick-change from drab to fab, and of course, the high notes. Everyone I spoke to who saw it on the same night was blown away, no matter their age or gender! There are so many great songs in Frozen the Musical that we know and love from the films, and the new additions for the stage production are mostly great, too (although not as catchy). Frozen the Musical Singapore will make for a memorable night out for the whole family, and it will stick with you long after the curtain (and the snow!) falls.
