While Singapore’s weather is often unpredictable, one thing’s for sure, when it rains, it pours! To help you (and your child) stay dry in style, here are the wet-weather essentials you need right now

Hands up who’s been caught in a deluge lately and had to spend the rest of the day in the office or on the school run with squelchy shoes? To help you dodge the downpours, we’ve rounded up some fab rainy-day essentials for mums and kids. From printed raincoats and chic jelly shoes, to adorable wellies for kids and neon brollies, we’ve got you covered. Here’s the wet-weather gear you need right now…

Jelly shoes (nope, they aren’t just for kids!)

Worried about rainy days ruining your pedicure? Slip on some Melissas! Photo credit: Melissa Shoes

We’ve all suffered the heartbreak of having fab leather sandals become sodden by the rain. Turns out you don’t have to sacrifice your style during wet season after all – invest in Melissa’s chic, waterproof jelly kicks! Not only are they comfy, they come in tons of styles and colours to suit every occasion. For mums on the run (all of us!), Melissa have heaps of styles to choose from, including the Melissa Creeper + A la Garconne ($77.50) and Melissa Doll II ($39). The delicate bows add a girly finish to the classic designs – but if you’re into something a bit more edgy, we love the Jason Wu collab for our fancy flats. For dressier occasions, make a statement with Vivienne Westwood Anglomania heels or unconventional peep-toe pumps (although best to save the peep-toes for a less torrential day!).

A waterproof bag

There are many reasons why Longchamp bags are totes popular: aside from the classic, minimal designs, they’re lightweight yet extremely durable, and can hold LOTS! Our own Longchamp Le Pliage nylon numbers can easily deal with the weight of 2kg laptops, and all our essential mum stuff – and they also make a great nappy bag. They’re foldable, waterproof and rain is no bother at all, thunderstorms included. Pick from a range of colours and sizes and feel safe in the knowledge that your bag contents will never be soggy again.

Want a variation of this timeless tote? The Le Pliage Néo  is a reinvention of the classic design. It’s made of satin-finish nylon and trimmed with tone-on-tone leather and has a graphic cross-grain pattern. The shoulder strap is also thicker, more padded and comes with a longer strap for you to convert it into an effortless, cross-body style. Perfect for wearing while you run through the rain clutching two toddlers and an umbrella!

Unbreakable brollies

We love Kate Spade’s quirky take on the clear brolly! Photo credit: Kate Spade

We’ve all resorted to the emergency umbrella purchase at 7-11, or picked up a cheapie that blew inside out at the first gust of wind. Sure, brollies can be a hassle to carry, and many are just floppy things waiting to break. Drumroll please… We think we’ve found the one– the sturdy Muji Markable ($29) is a solid, affordable option and we LOVE them! Though lightweight, its resin frame is sturdy and compact when folded, and even comes with a handy shoulder strap so you don’t have to fumble around in your bag when the heavens open. We also have a big brolly crush on the striking Kate Spade Love is in the Air Umbrella ($38) from Shopbop, which will help you battle the rain in style.

Cute parkas and raincoats

Raincoats aren’t just for little ones – throw on a stylish anorak or parka to complete your outfit when the clouds are rolling in. Dodge the downpours with this affordable ASOS DESIGN over the head rainmac ($27.79) – it’s lightweight and comes in a cool colourblock print that’s sure to stand out. If you’re looking to make a splash, get matchy-matchy with your lad with the iconic raincoat from Petit Bateau (approx $270). Like the child’s version, the one for adults is fully lined in milleraies jersey (super soft!) and features a discreet logo.

No more panda eyes!

Smudged mascara is one thing we could all do without. To avoid that drowned raccoon look, get your hands on a good waterproof version. Makeup gurus swear by Covergirl’s LashBlast Volume Waterproof Mascara and L’Oréal Paris Voluminous Waterproof Mascara – both will give you big, bold lashes without budging.

For higher splurge options, the Benefit BADgal Waterproof Mascara ($20) creates full, dramatic lashes and is said to last for ages (we’ve seen reports that it stays on underwater!). But if you’re looking to invest in a ‘holy grail’ mascara, the luscious Lancôme Hypnose Waterproof Custom Volume Mascara thickens and lengthens, while staying in place. Rain, we’re ready for you.

Wellies for splashing in puddles!

You can take puddle-jumping to the next level with these Crocs wellies! Photo credit: Crocs

Once your littles have a pair of  Next UK Rainbow Wellies ($23-27) on, they’re all set for as much puddle-jumping fun as they like. Other waterproof but funky options include Crocs rain boots ($34.99) and Havaianas Galochas Rain Boots from Flop Store ($60.29).

Adorable waterproofs and anoraks

Gap makes our list for affordable raincoats – the Jersey-lined Raincoat ($33.99) is a simple, adorable layer for kids to throw on before taking on a wet day, while Decathlon junior waterproof jackets (from $15) are spiffy and wallet-friendly.

The rainy day backpack

There’s nothing like a cute backpack to ward off the rainy days. Photo credit: Pupsik

We love pretty much everything produced by SkipHop, and this brand nails the balance between practicality and cute. We think this Skiphop unicorn backpack ($31.90) is just the thing for taking on the rainy season. Trolley bags may be good for wheeling around a heavy school load, but keep in mind that backpacks allow kids to hold their brolly in one hand, and your hand in the other.

A kid-sized brolly

We can’t help but rave about the colour change brolly from Smiggle ($34) to anyone who’ll listen. It does exactly as its name suggests: it changes colours when the rain pours down! There’s also some cute options in the Bugz range ($23.72) in Mothercare (plus they’re on sale right now!).

And finally… if you can’t beat it, join it: water play!

On those days when the weather just can’t seem to decide between sweltering heat and thunderstorms, try the Aquaplay 528 Megabridge System from The Better Toy Store ($199.90) which lets kids explore the physics of water while having loads of fun – indoors (make sure you have lots of towels to hand!).
