National Day Singapore 2017: our guide to SG52 events and fireworks for families

Happy birthday Singapore! Here's where we're celebrating SG52 with the kids...

Hip hip hooray: it’s nearly National Day! Celebrate Singapore’s 52nd birthday (on 9 August of course) with the kids at one of these stellar picks around the Lion City: From a party in the sky to a heritage carnival, a feast full of local dishes to a date with cool wildlife, we’ve got the scoop on National Day celebrations in our guide to SG52 events for families. Check back in as we’ll be adding more awesome events as they’re announced!


Catch the aerial displays and the fireworks
While seats were claimed long ago for the National Stadium’s official parade festivities, those of us not lucky enough to get a spot can still join in with the celebrations! Pick one of our tried-and-tested firework viewing points around town to see the skies light up plus helicopter and airplane displays! This dazzling event is returning to The Float @ Marina Bay this year.

Get up close to a Monster Truck
We’re already counting down the days until the monster sporting event of the year, Monster Jam, which roars into town on 19 August. Fans can get a sneak peek of one of the whopping great Monster Jam trucks, the beast that is El Toro Loco, and check out a cool crush car before getting busy with colouring activities over at the Singapore Sports Hub on National Day. You might well find a small, middle aged massive Monster Jam fan at the front of the queue…

Wear the kids out with bouncy castles and sports challenges
Once you’re done checking out the Monster Truck, spend the day celebrating all things Singapore at the National Day Fiesta 2017. Expect a whole day of fun at the Sports Hub including a family picnic, sports challenges, a 52-minute National Day fitness workout and a family-friendly carnival: bouncy castles, people! The event is suitable for kiddos – and grown ups – of all ages.

Teach your kids a thing or two about urban gardening
There may not be many farms in Singapore, but we love bringing our kids to Bollywood Veggies to give them a feel for the countryside and all things green. We may have missed out on the sold-out farm tour happening on National Day (boooo!) but there is still plenty of great family-friendly fun happening to keep your little botanists busy with. Expect live music by Singapore’s own Ed Sheeran, Buskersaid, a Bolly Jolly Market packed with home-grown and home-made goodies and plenty of eats for all – we can’t wait to try the sambal stingray!

Bring the kids to a free print workshop at National Museum of Singapore
Join MATTER Prints at the National Museum of Singapore for a Print and Go or Linocut Carving and Printing workshop where kids – and grown ups – can get busy picking up new skills for free. Ready-made stencils are available for younger tots, while bigger kids can try carving and printing activities featuring iconic Singapore symbols in celebration of SG52. We can’t wait to see how HDB homes, durians, Merlions and orchids turn out in print!

Get your face painted: National Day style!
Get into a celebratory mood this National Day and get your face and hands painted in Singapore colours and flags! Kids AND adults welcome to join in the free fun!

Check out the circus in town!
The familiar massive blue and yellow tent has rolled into Singapore, and it can only mean one thing – the circus is in town! And not just any circus… Cirque du Soleil’s newest production, Kooza, has landed at Marina Bay Sands bringing with it crazy acrobatics and jaw-dropping stunts, all set to a live jazz, funk, Bollywood fusion soundtrack.

Encourage all things art at the Singapore Art Museum
Celebrate National Day with contemporary art at Singapore Art Museum and enjoy free entry from 10am! Engage in fun, family-friendly activities themed around the SG52 and don’t forget to check out the awesome exhibition, Imaginarium: To the Ends of the Earth.

Have a ton of fun at a children’s carnival, lah!
Head over to Expo to celebrate Singapore’s 52nd birthday with a carnival of fun-filled, family friendly activities sponsored by PlayLAH! Kiddos will love the carnival games, bouncy castles, temporary tattoos, hands-on workshops (think arts ‘n’ crafts including sticker craft, scratch craft and photo frame making!). Look out for lots of delicious local eats too!

Go wild with a Zoo, Bird Park or River Safari adventure

Watch the fireworks from a play park
The whole family can really get in the party mood at Pororo Play Park for the National Day celebrations where you’ll find activities including face painting, balloon sculpting, live streaming of the National Day Parade and a scrumptious feast for all. An aerial view of the fireworks display seals the deal.

Travel back in time to Singapore of old
To get a real feel for Singapore through the ages, we love the look of the Heritage Carnival 2017 happening over at Palawan Green. Hang out with roving characters dressed in costumes from pre-war Singapore, chow down on traditional eats at the food stalls, and keep the kiddos happy on an obstacle course designed for small people. Wind up the fun with a family-friendly movie under the stars.

See the Merlion’s National Day light show
The Merlion is one of THE iconic sights of Singapore, so it’s only fitting that it will be putting on its own tribute to National Day. Check out the special Merlion Magic Lights show which will be dazzling daily until 27 August. Expect a colourful canvas of lights set to audio and visual effects, and download the nifty app – marq+ – which will add an interactive dimension to the show.

Feast your way through 52 years of culinary history
Plate is whipping up a buffet menu of local delicacies designed to pay homage to 52 years of Singapore cuisine. Watch a live stream of the National Day Parade while filling your boots with local delights including chilli crab, laksa and satay and international goodies such as prime rib beef, honey salmon and BBQ pork ribs. Make your own patriotic mocktails (and cocktails)
If you’ve a head for heights then rock out your best red and white threads for a family-friendly party happening in the skies at the 1-Altitude Gallery & Bar: A National Day Rooftop Blowout. Kids can make their own National Day mocktails, while grown ups can try the more potent Red Dot 52 patriotic concoction. The bar makes the ideal spot for watching the iconic National Day Stage Flag flypast and firework display, and DJs will be playing throughout the evening to get the party going on the dance floor.

Bring the family for a sticky beak around the lush gardens, go exploring through all the rooms, check out the colourful performances and catch a guided tour to get the full lowdown on the President’s pad.
