Shining, shimmering, splendid – the hit Broadway musical, Disney's Aladdin makes all your childhood dreams come true and more...
Move over, Aladdin the movie – there’s a good reason why Disney Theatrical Production’s Aladdin has broken Broadway records and has more than 10 million people giving standing ovations. It’s not just the crazy costumes, awesome songs and amazing set. Last night, I witnessed the sparkly magic for myself and needless to say, I’m still under its spell.
A childhood dream IRL
Ever since the original Aladdin came out in 1992 and I was gifted a VHS copy (eek, old school) of the movie, like many other kids of the ’90s, I was an instant fan. I knew every song by heart, so while watching the show I was surprised I still remembered most of the lyrics. Nine-year-old me wanted Aladdin to take me on a spin on his magic carpet, have a Genie BFF and have the ability to rock a crop top and a pair of harem pants like Jasmine. Now that I think about it, I still wish for all these things…
Shining, shimmering and absolutely splendid
From the time the curtains rolled up, Aladdin was definitely a feast for the eyes. From the Swarovski-studded costumes (they used 500,000 Swarovski crystals!) to the jaw-dropping set, nine-year-old me would have been in absolute heaven. I loved seeing and hearing all the songs I knew from childhood come to life. But nothing could prepare me for the glitzy glory of the Cave of Wonders, topped off with a scene-stealing performance by the Genie, played by the ultra-fab Gareth Walters.
Guys, the magic carpet actually flies
As Jasmine and Aladdin were getting into A Whole New World mode, I was wondering how they would pull off the magic carpet scene. I mean, fine, there’s a way to make stuff fly in theatre aka strings, but when they made that magic carpet fly, everyone in the crowd lost it. How? Where are the strings? You could hear people (myself included) wondering out loud because it was just. That. Cool. There’s no doubt everyone who watched the play last night googled “magic+carpet+aladdin+musical”.
