Multilingual students at XCL World Academy will start on the school’s improved Bilingual Programme this August 2023. Here’s everything you need to know about it.
XCL World Academy (XWA) just announced that it’ll be rolling out enhancements to its English-Chinese (Mandarin) Bilingual Programme. Come August 2023, families can expect improvements in instructional support and engagement, as well as a more personalised learning experience for students.
An overview of XWA’s Bilingual Programme
XWA’s English-Chinese (Mandarin) Bilingual Programme is designed for both native and non-native Mandarin speakers from Pre-K to Grade 2. This programme is aligned with the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme framework, which encourages curiosity, creativity, collaboration, kindness, and mindfulness. Through this programme, students will master communication and language skills (listening, reading, speaking, and writing) in both English and Mandarin.
The programme will be conducted through a co-teaching and co-planning educational model. Teachers, teaching partners, and native-speaking language teachers work together to design and deliver lessons. With intentional co-planning, co-teaching, co-assessing, and co-reflecting, they can engage with the learners in a meaningful way, providing additional instructional support and reinforcing language skills.
This collaborative approach leads to a more enriching learning experience for students. It also provides improved instructional support, effective communication, diverse perspectives, heightened engagement, and personalised learning opportunities for bilingual learners.
How XWA is enhancing its Bilingual Programme
One of the major enhancements to the programme is the increase in teachers supporting XWA’s bilingual learners. In Pre-K to Grade 1 classes, bilingual homeroom teachers and teaching partners work together to deliver instruction in both English and Chinese (Mandarin). This creates an effective learning environment for young students. Establishing profound and meaningful connections with its students is of paramount importance to XWA, as the school places significant emphasis on personal, social, and emotional development. That is why it created a caring and nurturing learning environment where students feel at ease and familiar with the adults around them, fostering a sense of trust and confidence.
Grade 2 students will receive more comprehensive instruction from two homeroom teachers (a native English language teacher and a native Chinese language teacher) as well as a teaching partner to strengthen pronunciation and fluency in both languages. Together, these educators ensure all students receive personalised attention, tailoring lessons according to their unique needs, abilities, and preferred learning styles.
Additionally, XWA will be introducing two native-speaking co-teachers (an English-speaking and a Chinese-speaking) to provide in-class support for both teachers and students in Pre-K to Grade 1 bilingual classes. The school is confident that these changes will help it better support its students and ensure they receive the best bilingual education possible.
