Vera Ke found that her children became “more joyful and active” ever since they attended Nexus International School (Singapore). Here’s why…
As creating enjoyable environments is one of Nexus International School’s (Singapore) core values, the school really goes the extra mile to achieve this. From having open learning spaces designed by the educators themselves to providing pastoral care to learners who need it, everything has the learners’ best interests in mind.
The result? Happy learners who enjoy learning and attending school! And Nexus parent, Vera Ke, has witnessed this herself.
Hello Vera! Can you tell us more about your children?
I have two kids studying in Nexus: Tony, who’s in Grade 7, and Annie, who’s in Grade 5.
What were the most important factors for you when choosing a school for Tony and Annie?
The criteria that we were looking for when choosing a school for the kids were:
- Small classrooms and low teacher-student ratio, so Tony and Annie can receive individualised attention during their lessons;
- The school’s International Baccalaureate (IB) scores;
- A diverse student population, where children come from different countries and backgrounds to learn together in a global environment;
- And last but not least, a school that has a close relationship with families, so we as parents can get updates about our children and feedback from the teachers quickly.
The last bit is the most important one for me, and I was glad to learn about this during my kids’ enrolment process at Nexus.
And has Nexus lived up to your expectations?
It has – Nexus did well in every way! Coming from China, where the education style creates a lot of pressure and stress on my kids, I had hoped that an international school would allow them to learn in a happy and positive environment. We’re so glad to find this at Nexus!
Ever since we came to the school, I noticed that my kids have become more joyful and active; and they love to share about the things that they’ve done in school. For example, They would tell us about how they made new friends; or how they can sit – or even lie – on the floor while studying! They’re excited that they’re no longer forced to sit stiff at a desk while listening to lessons.
That sounds fun! What do your kids like most about attending Nexus?
Overall, they enjoy studying and playing with their classmates the most. Take Tony’s class for example: He always had an interest in space, and it just so happened that this semester’s Science class focuses on planets. The teacher is very enthusiastic about what he’s teaching, so it really helped to further Tony’s knowledge and deepened his interest in this area.
The kids also love the swimming pool on campus, and they attend the swimming co-curricular activity at Nexus.
How did the school make Tony and Annie feel welcome?
Almost every teacher we met knew my children’s name, and they always smiled and said hello to each other.
What about parents – does Nexus have a community for them, and how does it communicate with parents?
We communicate with the school via WhatsApp and WeChat. Every class group has a Whatsapp group that’s created by the school’s Learner Services team, which allows us to interact with other parents. The school also caters to Chinese families by creating WeChat groups.
We also receive feedback about Tony and Annie’s activities and homework every day via the Canvas and Seesaw platforms.
What do you value most about the school?
I really appreciate the teachers, who are all very responsible. Tony encountered some obstacles when he just started Science classes as there were quite a few words that he didn’t understand. As a result, his grades suffered. His Science teacher took the time to inform me about this via email and even sent over the class outlines so I could support Tony with his revisions at home. The teacher was also available to answer any questions we had. This was really helpful for us, and we really appreciate the close support that he offered.
Finally, why would you recommend Nexus to other parents?
Nexus is a great school because kids can learn happily, make a lot of good friends, and they’re being taught by kind and responsible teachers!
Thank you for speaking to us, Vera!
