Theatre is back in a big way! We were so excited to hear The Illusionists have arrived straight from Broadway and are performing at Sands Theatre at Marina Bay Sands this June. We checked out the show to give you the lowdown on what to expect...
In our brand new series – HoneyKids Tries – we’re giving you the lowdown on the latest happenings in Singapore and putting them to the test! We know time is precious (and even more so for us parents), so we want to give you the official lowdown because, let’s face it, no one wants to be disappointed! First up, we sneaked in a date night to see The Illusionists live in Singapore at Sands Theatre, Marina Bay Sands. Here’s our verdict and insider tips for you to make the most of your evening out…
HONEYKIDS TRIES: THE ILLUSIONISTS LIVE IN SINGAPORE – OUR INSIDER TIPS
DO: Take public transport
Traffic is hectic around Marina Bay at the moment, and parking is nigh on impossible. Between iLight Singapore, Jumptopia Gastrobeats, and the arrival of The Illusionists to Sands Theatre, along with the usual bar and restaurant-goers in the area, your safest mode of transport is via MRT or taxi. If you live close enough, why not walk the river and take in the sights?
DO: Arrive early
If, like us, you are out of practice with attending theatre shows, then take this as your reminder to arrive early! Doors closed, and The Illusionists started right on time, and you do not want to miss the opening acts of this show! If you catch an evening performance (or a matinee, we’re not judging), you can sneak a pre-drink from the theatre bar and stand at one of the small round tables to people-watch and see everyone dressed up in their theatre attire. We opted for a glass of bubbles, and the best part is that you can carry your drink in with you to your seat and enjoy some respite from your mask as you sip!
DO: Take older kids
The Illusionists are supremely talented, and as such, some of the illusions can appear very real (and, therefore, a little scary for smaller kids). Spoiler alert: at one point, a magician is ‘impaled’ on a sword! It’s not gory and only lasts a second, so if you think your kids can handle that, then bring them along! The recommended age is four and above, but we think slightly older kids would better appreciate the cleverness of the card tricks and the brilliance of the audience participation. This is also a fabulous option for a special date night, which is how we did it!
DO NOT: Try and understand the magic of The Illusionists
This show is truly awesome, and you need to just enjoy the magic! Yes, part of the fun is asking each other after each ‘wow’ moment, ’how did they do that?!’ But as with all magic shows, you don’t really want to know.
DO: Make a booking for post-show dinner after The Illusionists
You’re in the heart of Marina Bay Sands, and there are some great restaurant options to choose from. And better still – they are now opening late! After the 7:30pm show, we made a 10:00pm booking at Gordon Ramsay’s Bread Street Kitchen for dinner, and it was the perfect end to a perfect date night evening.
DO NOT: Skip dessert.
The chocolate fondant was a masterpiece.
DO: Book Tickets now!
