Dover Court International School is the only international school in Singapore to enjoy an exclusive collaboration with the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
2024 may have only just begun, but students at Dover Court International School have gained quite a bit of insight into the world of STEAM and university life.
The school recently hosted three students from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) as part of the Nord Anglia Education (NAE) group’s (of which Dover Court is part of) exclusive collaboration with the prestigious university. The MIT students facilitated a wide range of STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics) learning opportunities for Doverians, and even shared about their experience during the school’s university talk session.
A sneak peek of the recent NAE x MIT collaboration
STEAM subjects are included as part of Dover Court’s curriculum from primary school level onwards. The focus on STEAM subjects is said to equip young minds with crucial 21st century skills that will enable them to thrive in school and beyond. And what better way to develop these skills than to have students learn from the experts of MIT, an institution at the forefront of STEAM research and thinking?
Throughout their three weeks at Dover Court, the MIT students have hosted workshops in physics, digital art, and world-building. Year 4 students were treated to an electrifying hands-on lesson in circuits; Year 5 students explored their artistic side by creating art through the latest softwares; whereas the Year 6 students went out of this world (figurative!) to create imagined worlds and universes of their own.
Sixth Formers who are taking the International Baccalaureate Visual Arts subject had the chance to gain more in-depth knowledge about digital art from the MIT visitors. Last but not least, they also benefited from a university talk session with the MIT students, who shared about their experience and areas of research at the leading university.
What else can Doverians expect from the MIT collaboration?
In case you’re wondering, NAE’s collaboration with MIT isn’t just limited to workshops and talks facilitated by the university’s visiting students. One of the many ways Dover Court’s students get to benefit from this exclusive collaboration is through the STEAM teacher workshops that take place during the summer break. Teachers from Dover Court receive hands-on training from MIT researchers on various STEAM topics, knowledge of which they can bring back and teach their students.
Doverians get to participate in in-school STEAM challenges that are inspired by MIT’s innovative ways of learning too. This includes solving puzzles and real-world issues using tech tools, or tools they create themselves. And the most exciting of all? The annual trip to MIT itself. Selected students from NAE schools all over the world have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to visit the university to speak to its scientists and even participate in STEAM workshops!
