Fun fact: This is the second time that Brighton College (Singapore) has been awarded a medal in the ‘Best Small School of Singapore’ award category.
Brighton College (Singapore) has once again won Best Small School of Singapore (less than 700 pupils) in our Singapore Education Awards 2022. It’s only been two years since the now Gold and Silver-winning school opened its doors to pupils, which has now grown from 36 pupils to 232 this year. So what exactly is Brighton’s winning factor? Here’s what we found out.
Why did Brighton College (Singapore) win
Good things sometimes come in small packages; and the Best Small School of Singapore category acknowledges this. We want to celebrate small schools that don’t scrimp on quality, schools that strive to give students exceptional learning opportunities through innovative educational programmes despite their size.
What really impressed the judges is Brighton’s commitment to providing each child with the best pupil experience at its school. It believes that great pupil experience can bring about the best possible outcomes for each child. The school’s low pupil ratio is instrumental in achieving this goal, as teaching staff can dedicate personalised attention to each pupil. Brighton College’s teachers understand each of their pupil’s passions and interests. Pupils are encouraged to explore their interests further through the specialist lessons and teachers offered by the school, as well as the many after-school clubs available.
From leadership opportunities to a New Curiosity Shop
Leadership roles are one of the many opportunities that Brighton offers to create the best pupil experience for each child. This ranges from something as simple as being a ‘Pelican Pal’, House Captain or to being an elected representative for their peers in the school’s Student Council. Each of these leadership roles exposes pupils to different kinds of responsibilities and skills that are required of a leader.
Pupils at Brighton also have access to large-school facilities like a multipurpose gym, outdoor swimming pool, iMac Suites, Maker Lab, and more. All these work towards enhancing both their overall school experience in both academic and non-academic aspects.
On top of that, the school is in the midst of opening a ‘New Curiosity Shop’ to further engage and inspire pupils to learn. Take a creative writing task as an example: rather than having pupils sit down and try to write based on their imagination, Brighton’s pupils can pay the mysterious shopkeeper of its Curiosity Shop a visit for some ideas. This mysterious shopkeeper will introduce some of the shop’s most valuable items, which could be anything from a dusty locked box (a forgotten box of treasure?) or a silk handkerchief printed with a map (directions to the hidden, magical world of dragons?). What a great way to go about inspiring pupils to think and write creatively!
Brighton’s efforts didn’t go unnoticed by its pupils’ families
What’s a good gauge as to whether a school’s strategy works? Recognition from the pupils’ families themselves, of course! The school shared that its efforts and dedication have been recognised by pupils’ families. Parents and teachers are always in constant communication with each other, from getting updates on a child’s learning progress or addressing significant concerns. Both parties work in a close partnership that goes towards creating not just a great school but the best pupil experience and outcome as well.
Why we love Brighton
There’s nothing that delights us more than a school that finds innovative ways to inspire a love of learning among its pupils. What’s more, Brighton strives to provide its pupils with fantastic opportunities that are akin to those offered in large schools.
Congratulations, Brighton College (Singapore)!
