The transition from Junior to Senior School is never an easy one. Read on to find out how Tanglin Trust School helps its new senior students navigate this period with its Middle School offering.
Remember your first year as a secondary school student? As exciting as it is to take the next step into Senior School, you’re also slightly nervous about this whole new journey. You’re faced with new challenges, academically, socially and emotionally.
Tanglin Trust School understands the importance of the first few years of secondary school. It’s a fundamental stage of a young person’s learning journey as they mature and adjust to life as a secondary school student. As such, the school has in place a solid Middle School programme to help its new Seniors navigate this transitional time.
Welcome to Tanglin Middle School!
Tanglin Senior School is made up of Middle School, Upper School, and Sixth Form. Upon completing Junior School, your child will start their first few years as a student in Middle School. The Middle School marks the start of Senior School for Years 7-9 and ages 11 to 14.
Tanglin families can expect Middle School to focus on fostering growth in three key areas among its students: curiosity, confidence and community.
A school that encourages curiosity
A curious student is an engaged student. Tanglin Middle School provides students with opportunities to practise skills in reflection, critical thinking, research, and creativity through an array of subjects. But it’s not all just textbooks in the classrooms, the school has a variety of fun academic-based learning initiatives as well. This includes Tanglin Tedx Talk series, participating in the World Scholars Cup and F1 in Schools, as well as the Tanglin annual Hackathon competitions. From promoting interdisciplinary learning, exploring STEM, to exercising problem-solving skills on real-world problems, the possibilities to learn and apply knowledge are encouraged as part of the Tanglin Middle School experience.
A school that builds confidence
Identity formation happens during the adolescent years. As such, it’s crucial for schools to support students through this phase. Tanglin’s Life Skills curriculum is a strong tool that its Middle School uses to instil positive education principles. Students are taught valuable skills on how to strengthen relationships and build positive emotions. It also encourages self-care, engagement, accomplishment and purpose. All these go towards building a confident and positive individual who possesses skills to help them thrive.
A school that is all about community
Schools are like a student’s second home due to the amount of time they spend there. Tanglin takes this one step further by giving all of its students a ‘home’ through its whole school House system. Students first join their House in Infant School and remain in the same House throughout their time at Tanglin. The House system fosters community and belonging; and this is never more important than during the transitional years of Middle School. Students can represent their House in a variety of activities and competitions such as music, sports, and debating – all of which enhance their time in Tanglin Middle School.
Tanglin Middle School is committed to developing happy learners
The Middle School at Tanglin doesn’t just support students to achieve success in Senior School, but in life beyond school as well. The school’s nurturing approach and variety of offerings – both academic and co-curricular – allow students to learn how to learn, enjoy learning, and equip them with skills to flourish.
