Your Weekly Recipe Planner Snack Attack
It’s finally the much-awaited snack time – they’ve done all the homework, packed their books, and now they look at you with puppy-dog eyes for the munchies you promised as a reward. Don’t disappoint your sweethearts with boring treats; try your hand at these adorable, delish, and healthy snacks for kids recipes that we’ve rounded up in this week’s weekly recipe planner.
Carrot Patches
This is one tasty treat that your littlies are sure to dig. Essentially just baby carrots with hummus dip, serve it up in a mini-cup (similar to a small terra-cotta pot) to make it look like an adorable potted plant. Dump in generous spoonfuls of hummus as ‘the soil’ in your mini-cup, and then stick in your desired number of baby carrots. Voila, you’ll be done under five!
Balls of Energy
Nutritious, energy-boosting, packs the moppet’s favourite peanut butter and chocolate, and most importantly – darn easy to make. Simply mash a small banana and half cup of peanut butter in a bowl, stir in required amount of wheat germ (sold at your nearest organic store), roll tablespoons of mixture into balls, and coat with assorted nuts and chocolate chips. They make handy grab-and-go bites before the tykes scurry off for playtime!
Blueberry Banana Gingersnap S’mores
A hit with the Honey gals who craved work snacks, these delectable treats are sure to satisfy sweet tooths young and old alike. The recipe teaches you how to bake your own Gingersnap cookies, but we use a pack of store-bought ones to save time. Place a marshmallow between a pair of cookies (like a mini sandwich) and stick in blueberries and sliced bananas. Make as many as you want, then pop them into a microwave to melt the marshmallow and tada – instant gooey goodness. Blueberries and banana make a winning combination but feel free to mix it up with other fruits.
Baked Sweet Potato Fries
If your squirt is getting hooked on those sinful salt-covered French fries from Macs, it’s time to step in and do some damage control. Try serving up home-made sweet potato fries, which make a healthy alternative to those hazardous fast-food bites. This recipe will require a little more time, but your child’s health is worth it. Slice sweet potatoes into wedges, lightly season with olive oil, salt, and chilli powder (if your littlie likes spice), and pop into the oven for around 25 minutes. Dish with a side of ketchup or a fresh squeeze of lime juice.
Fresh Fruit Popsicle
For your ice-cream loving tot, who would rather chow down on Ben & Jerry’s instead of eat their meals, here’s a (naturally sweet) treat to keep them in check. All you need to do is chop up fresh berries (strawberries, blueberries, and cranberries), peaches, and kiwis, and scoop the mixture into popsicle molds. Pour enough juice (we vote for fresh apple juice) into each mold to ensure the fruit chunks are covered, insert popsicle sticks, and place the molds in the freezer. It takes at least five hours to freeze, but we suggest making these snacks the night before and freezing them overnight.
