How did Nexus International School (Singapore) manage to pick up its three wins? Spoiler alert: it all has to do with its campus and learners...
Nexus International School (Singapore) walks the talk when prioritising its learners. The school’s campus was designed to be flexible and open to enhance its learners’ educational experiences. This is why Nexus was awarded Gold for School with the Best All-Round Facilities in the Singapore Education Awards 2022! Additionally, Nexus’ innovative learning environment and goal of cultivating future-ready students have clinched the school with the silver awards for Best Innovative Learning Environment and Entrepreneurship in Education. Such outstanding achievements, we say!
Why Nexus International School (Singapore) won one Gold and two Silver awards
We can think of a few good reasons why the school picked up the three awards. What are those reasons?
Flexible, open spaces conducive to learning
Nexus’ new campus in Aljunied was designed by its educators in collaboration with architects. The design ethos is “wall-less, open-plan, flexible areas”. Why? Because the school believes learning can take place anywhere instead of within four walls. Which other school allows you to learn in a double-storey treehouse? Through this initiative, learners get to collaborate with each other easily.
When the Year 6s were planning their exhibition, the learners gathered in various parts of their learning space to work on projects based on world issues they wanted to tackle. The entire space was filled with excitement as learners darted around to speak with each other or look for resources. We can imagine how buzzy the place must be!
State-of-the-art facilities further bolster the learning experience
Fun fact: Nexus is one of only five Apple Distinguished Schools in Singapore that’s recognised as a hub of innovation, leadership, and educational excellence! Every classroom space is outfitted with ViewSonic Screens with Airplay compatibility, and personal Apple devices, which allow learners to collaborate electronically. How cool is that!
Nexus has many state-of-the-art facilities that are worth mentioning. Its sports teams have access to two large, air-conditioned gyms equipped with tiered seating. Swimmers can practise their strokes and do laps at the Aquatics Centre, which features a 50-metre Olympic-sized pool fitted with the latest Omega touchpads. Aspiring musicians can pop into soundproof practice rooms and recording studios during break periods. Psst, there’s also a co-working space for parents of Nexus’ learners!
Learners get to be creative and think outside the box
The innovative learning environment, coupled with Nexus’ inquiry-based learning experiences, helps the school cultivate its learners to be future-ready. Learners get to pursue causes they care about and topics they are interested in while being supported with resources and guidance.
Year 6 and 7 learners devised concepts to make the school’s bus bay a safe and fun place for everyone. Their process included cost estimates, material research, and presenting their ideas to Nexus’ decision-makers. Another team started JoyBox, where they raised toiletries and necessities for migrant workers in Singapore. IBDP learners are encouraged to participate in the Junior Achievement Company of the Year. The programme provides valuable experience as learners go through a comprehensive overview of the business lifecycle.
Nexus has also partnered with Young Founders School, a technology-focused education non-profit that aims to change the way entrepreneurship is taught. The Year 12s participated in a three-hour long ideation workshop that gives them a taste of entrepreneurship.
Why we love Nexus
Nexus would not have been able to achieve what it is today without its team of highly skilled and experienced educators. Inspired learning starts with motivated and professional teachers, as the school proudly proclaims. We’re also in awe of “The Nexus Way”, which was created with key elements of Mindsets, Relationships, Inclusion, and Innovation. Nexus definitely deserves the accolades it received at this year’s awards.
Well done, Nexus International School (Singapore)!
