We love to put on some Kylie and sing into our hairbrushes once in a while, but many of us sadly missed out on actual singing lessons… Or, progressing much beyond Three Blind Mice on the recorder when it came to learning music as a child. Which is why we want our own kiddos to get into music lessons here in Singapore! But how do we go about picking one that our kids are in tune with? And age and skill-appropriate? Well, we spoke to seven music schools around Singapore and got the lowdown on the fun classes available, who they are aimed at and what their thoughts are on encouraging a passion for music from an early age. Music lessons for kids in Singapore
1. Muse Arts
What it is: Head to Muse Arts for the perfect way to introduce your toddler to the idea of music. Your little maestros will love getting their groove on while being exposed to rhythms, melody and tempo.
Who it’s for: Tots as young as six months through to 12 years.
What they say: At Muse Arts, we strongly believe in guiding and encouraging self-expression from children. Learning is based on their own experiences during classes but within a controlled environment. Muse Arts programmes are catered for children as young as 6 months to 12 years old. 2. Silversnow Music School
What it is: Silversnow Music School is a MOE registered school that offers students affordable music theory classes, singing lessons and instruction in an impressive range of instruments including piano, flute, violin and even the ukulele!
Who it’s for: Music lessons are designed for kiddos aged four and up. Psst, piano lessons are the most popular choice here for younger music makers.
What they say: Students of Silversnow Music School are trained to be confident young individuals in a conducive learning environment. The school believes in providing students with holistic music education. How? By charting the students’ learning journeys through weekly student progress feedback.

3. Gary and Seven Music Together
What it is: Since 1987, Gary and Seven Music Together, an internationally licensed Early Childhood Music Program, has been encouraging tots and parents to sing, shake, cartwheel and make some noise at the fun, informal sessions.
Who it’s for: Children aged zero to six years, and accompanying parents.
What they say: We are not your typical music class. We do not teach kids the skills of mastering music. Instead, we facilitate and create music together as one big family. We believe that all kids are musical… and adults too! Our classes allow kids to be as adventurous as they want. Each class includes lots of drumming, singing and music-jamming – even cartwheeling into our sessions! Plus, we also believe that once we have music within us, it’s there for a lifetime!

4. Musical Monkeys
What it is: Musical Monkeys’ sessions are conducted in either English or German, and little ones will explore music through song, instruments, storytelling and props. It’s currently online-only due to Covid-19!
Who it’s for: Teeny tiny newborns through to preschool monkeys aged up to five can join in the musical fun.
What they say: Our classes are based on Orff Schulwerk, where children make music through activities that are natural and enjoyable for them. The repertoire is mainly based on traditional songs and nursery rhymes. Each class supports the holistic development of the child’s senses and intelligence, gross and fine motor skills, social and emotional skills, language and creativity. We hope that children leave our sessions having experienced the sheer joy of music. AKA, a natural outlet for creativity and self-expression…

5. Alternate Tone
What it is: Alternate Tone offers guitar, piano, ukulele and even DJ sessions with innovative lessons designed to fast-track progression with minimum frustration.
Who it’s for: These music lessons are suitable for mini-maestros aged four and up.
What they say: Our students will become technically proficient and eventually become musically independent. Aside from learning various technical skills, our students are able to learn their favourite pop songs, too! Our instructors will transcribe the scores and tailor according to their level.

6. Joy Music Studio
What it is: Kids on the East Coast will love Joy Music Studio. The teachers here are dedicated and passionate about engaging young minds with fun music lessons involving a variety of instruments.
Who it’s for: The Music Adventurer Programme has been created for kids aged four to seven. This course is designed to give students an introductory foundation to music by allowing them to select three instruments of their choice to begin learning.
What they say: We believe in exploration and encouraging the students at our music school to explore various instruments. And that means we don’t limit them to one particular course structure. Instead, we empower them to learn various instruments and music styles.

7. Boogie Bug Music by The Amazing Toybox
What it is: Sing, laugh and play with The Amazing Toybox duo, Mark and Reuben. They explore music with rhyme, song, instruments and puppets.
Who it’s for: These music lessons have been created with tots aged one to three years in mind. And for parents, too!
What they say: We use a variety of objects, from puppets, toys to materials, to cover the topics we like to introduce to the children. And different items are used to encourage kids to attempt something new, too. But the most important aspect of our class? It’s making sure lessons are fun and engaging. This gives your kids confidence, so that they don’t worry about other people in the room and just get on with enjoying themselves.
