ISS International School stands out for the Agartson family with its ‘kampong spirit' and warm environment.
When it comes to choosing a school for their daughters, the Agartsons want one that is “peaceful, warm, and inclusive”. While they do take school size and the available facilities into consideration, the couple believes that a school that gives a feeling of ‘home’ is what their girls need.
We spoke to Gustaf and Louise Agartson to find out how their school of choice – ISS International School – embodies everything they’re looking for, and more.
Hi Gustaf and Louise, can you share a little about your daughters who are attending ISS?
Our eldest, Adrienne, is currently eight years old and attends Grade 3. Our youngest, Naomi, is five and is in Kindergarten 2.
You shared that you were looking for a “peaceful, warm, and inclusive” school for your daughters. How did these characteristics come through in ISS?
The staff we met at ISS during our school visit instantly gave us the feeling of ‘home’. It’s also known for having the ‘kampong spirit’, where everyone knows and takes care of each other. ISS is a beautiful school with a soul.
How did the school make your daughters feel welcome when they first joined?
Thanks to the school’s cosy and welcoming atmosphere, settling into ISS was easy for Adrienne and Naomi. The small class sizes made the girls feel at home very quickly. Knowing that the teachers could give them and their friends the attention they need made all the difference.
What curriculum does the school offer?
ISS is an International Baccalaureate (IB) Continuum school that offers the Primary Years, Middle Years, and Diploma programmes. However, students have the option of pursuing the American-style High School Diploma pathway in Grade 9.
ISS also offers a comprehensive English as an Additional Language programme to students who require language support.
How would you rate the level of communication you receive from ISS?
The school does a great job at keeping us updated with events and important information, no matter how big or small these are.
Is there a community for parents in ISS?
Yes, there’s quite a lot going on each year, from sports day to art and theatre performances; and we are always invited. There’s the Celebration of Learning event too, where students present their projects and perform for parents and the ISS community, demonstrating their creativity and growth through inquiry-based learning. ISS’ parent-teacher association organises frequent coffee meet-ups, walks, and workshops for families to participate in too.
Are your daughters enjoying their time at ISS?
Definitely! They love their friends, teachers, and small classes, all of which we value as parents.
Lastly, do you have any tips to share with parents who are still looking for the perfect school for their children?
Every child is unique and it’s important for parents to find the best fit for them to learn and blossom. Going on a school tour makes a lot of difference, as you can instantly get a feel of the type of school and environment it has. If possible, try to speak to parents with children attending the school – they’re often the best people to answer all the questions you have about it.
Thanks for sharing with us, Gustaf and Louise!
