Empowering girls through technology
Girls can do anything. But we need to give them the right tools. Learning how to change a car tyre, swim your way out of a rip, win at Scrabble and sing one great karaoke song are all good skills to have, but modern life is more ‘e-commerce and digital marketing experience’ and less ‘list your hobbies’ when it comes to a CV.
One string we can add to their bow to prepare them for the online world that will certainly touch them no matter what career path they take, is to learn how to code. No longer the reserve of ‘geeky’ kids, more and more boys are adopting this skill. Now, its time to get the girls involved. How? First Code Academy are running an upcoming Girls Can Code AppJamming Workshop.
This clever community workshop is specifically designed for girls aged 10 to 15 years of age and no prior experience is necessary. Not only will they discover how to build Android apps and games amongst their peers and under the guidance of experts, they will also learn to apply their logic and hone problem solving skills, crucial for getting ahead.
And where can they head? Sheryl Sandberg and Marissa Mayer have paved the way for women to reach the top of tech. But whether or not our girls want to reach those dizzy heights, at least with skills like these they’ll have the power to choose.
Nab one of the 40 places available – at only $5 per person, it’s incredible value too.
