Hop to it, bunnies: The Little Company’s A Peter Rabbit Tale has bounced onto stage here in Singapore with a lovely musical adaptation suitable for the whole fam. We caught the opening performance with our own little rabbits, so read on for our scoop on all the on-stage fun. Our highlights? A rock ‘n’ roll hedgehog, a super stroppy teenager bunny, and a couple of squirrels who have the funkiest hairdresser in Singapore…
Inspired by the children’s classic by Beatrix Potter, this lovely page-to-stage version has been reimagined by Sarah Brandt, and tells the tale of Peter Rabbit in a children’s production overflowing with laughs, audience participation and warm ‘n’ fuzzy feels. The show is suitable for kiddos age four and up (although there were plenty of younger littlies in the audience enjoying the fun), and the simple-but-effective scenery, costumes and cosy setting really made it feel as if we’d been personally invited to join the adventure.
Peter is rather, dare we say it, lazy and mischievous, and basically just wants to hang out with his toys and do zilch to help out around the house (sound familiar?). His stroppy ways and sibling rivalry issues certainly resonated humorously with my family! We also loved that the kids were made to feel part of the story, especially whenever the cast came off stage to run amok in the audience: look out for the hair-raising and slightly psychedelic looking cat (she did scare a few tinier tots).
The small cast worked beautifully together: thumbs-up to the cute-as-pie squeaky squirrels and their serious mullet hairdos and temperamental Peter and his funky jacket. But the star of the show for us? Mrs Tiggy-Winkle the hedgehog and her David Bowie-inspired hair, massive tutu and Doc Marten boots. She was, quite simply, amazeballs! There was a character for all kids to relate with (my four-year-old is Peter Rabbit, and my nine-year-old certainly knows how to rock a tutu while getting annoyed with her little brother, Flopsy and Mopsy-style). And we were all on board with the underlying lessons about family and being yourself: all delivered with zero cheese factor.
Our advice? Hop, skip and jump over to KC Arts Centre before this lovely feel-good show springs back outta town on 14 April.
