Free storytelling, workshops and craft
50 fun-filled literary activities, two weekends, one amazing venue – it’s the Coachella of kids literature! Part of the Singapore Writers Festival 2014, Little Lit! is a free book extravaganza for children (aged 4 to 12) and families!
Celebrating the wonders of reading, writing, and story-telling, these programmes will appeal not just to bookworms, but any kid who has a bit of imagination and loves a good story. This year, it will be held over two weekends (1-2 and 8-9 November) at The National Museum of Singapore.
Featuring popular international children’s authors such as Jacqueline Harvey and Sally Rippin and Singapore favourites, Tan Ter Cheah and Lynette Morrison, programme highlights include workshops and meet-and-greet sessions with story creators! Here’s our pick of what not to miss
Unwrap Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
This delightful drama workshop, conducted by ACT 3, celebrates the 50th anniversary of Roald Dahl’s classic tale. Open to little chocoholics aged seven and above, participants will get the chance to dramatise their favourite moments from the book
Walking With Dinosaurs
During this unique session kids can get up close and personal with genuine dinosaur fossils and hear from authors Andy Chua and Amon Chua (who’s just 12 years old!) about their love for fossil collecting.
Pai Pai Cho Dialect Nursery Rhymes
For a bit of local flavour, the Wu Jia Ban Singing School will revisit charming nursery rhymes and keep tradition alive in Mandarin, Cantonese, Teochew, and other Chinese dialects.
There’s a host of interactive activities to check out too, like ‘Storytelling for Little Ones’, ‘Let’s Make Up Stories’, and ‘Oodles of Doodles’, where kids will not get into trouble for drawing on walls – in fact, its encouraged! Our personal fave is the ‘Introduction to Pop up Books Workshop’, a neat session showing kids how to make their very own pop-up card and how they can use this technique to tell a story
As so much parenting literature says, one of the single best things we can do for our kids is read to them. What better place to get friendly with the written word than at the Singapore Writers Festival Little Lit! Check it out!
