Part two: Inspired from Movies
We had so much fun surfing the web for our Classic DIY Halloween costumes that we decided to do it all again. Check out these hauntingly good movie-themed costumes – all easy-to-MYO – and let your junior juggernauts have their best shot at emulating their idols.
Despicable Me Minions
Despicable Me is definitely one of this years top flicks for both kids and adults! Minions look set to be one of the top costume trends for Halloween 2013.
What You’ll Need: Yellow beanie hat/ski hat, Black pipe cleaners, Toilet paper tube, Silver paint, Black elastic (thick), Yellow shirt and Blue dungarees. You can also use a yellow hoodie and blue dungaree overalls (shown above).
Directions: To make this costume you have to concentrate on the Minion’s iconic Yellow Heads. Thread the black pipe cleaners through the ski hat (or glue them on if you’re not using a knit hat). To make the goggles, cut the toilet roll tube into small sections and paint the outside silver. Then staple your thick, black elastic strap onto the “goggles”. Don’t forget to watch the movie to get them into character! When you’re ready to head out, dress your Minion in a long sleeve yellow shirt, blue dungerees, and their Minion yellow head and watch everyone swoon!
Halloween experts should add yellow face paint to show true dedication to the character!
Super Heroes
What You’ll Need: ½ Meter felt, Ribbon, Fabric Glue, Elastic, Black marker
Directions: Super heroes have been making a heroic Halloween comeback in recent years, and with all the new super hero movies coming out, it’s no wonder! Check out these fabulously simple (but amazingly effective) Super Suits from Twin Dragonfly Designs, and ask your little hero who their favorite is. (Tip – thanks to the new movie, Iron Man is set to be this year’s most popular Halloween hero).
Halloween experts should add masks to protect your hero’s true identity!
Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz
What you’ll need: Blue-and-white checkered dress, White socks, White shirt, Red glitter shoes (or red shoes painted with glitter paint), and a Brown wicker basket.
Directions: This is possibly the simplest outfit of all! Dress Dorothy in a blue and white checkered dress with a white shirt, socks, and glittery red shoes. Tie her hair in low ponytails (if she’s got enough of it). Before heading out, watch the new movie to help get her into character, and don’t forget to warn her to look out for the Wicked Witch of the West!
Halloween experts should add a cuddly toy dog, because Dorothy always travels with Toto!
Where the Wild Things Are
You will need: Grey long sleeve sweatshirt with hood, Gray sweat pants, Gray felt, Gold Craft paper & decorating material, Gray plastic foam sheet, Black elastic, and a Small strip of gray faux fur.
Directions: The “Where the Wild Things Are” film may have come out in 2009, but this classic storybook is still giving us Halloween inspiration! For this simple, no frills costume, all you need to do is cut out clawed paws from a grey plastic foam sheet, and, using elastic, attach them to your little monster’s hands and feet (over their shoes). Next, cut out a gold crown and get your little one to help you decorate it! Some choose to add felt ears to their sweatshirt, but that’s an optional extra. For the monster’s tail, use a safety pin to attach a long strip of faux fur (10cm in width) to your sweat pants. For Halloween, dress your monster in gray, add their claws, paws, and don’t forget their crown to show that they’re king of the jungle!
Halloween experts should add a golden staff for the added glitz!
