Expecting or know someone who could benefit from extra postpartum support? KidStart has just launched the Pregnant Mum and Baby Nutrition Programme, a new initiative for low-income pregnant women
From 29 September, pregnant women from low-income backgrounds could receive special prenatal care packages, confinement meals and grocery vouchers from local non-profit organisation, KidStart.
The Pregnant Mum and Baby Nutrition Programme was started by the family-focused early childhood initiative to ensure better support for women from low-income backgrounds, who are over three times more vulnerable to clinical depression and anxiety according to chief executive of KidStart Singapore, Joel Tan.
The non-profit organisation estimates that over 2,200 pregnant women will benefit from this new programme.
To be eligible, families will have to:
- Register as a KidStart family
- Have a monthly household income of no more than $2,500 OR gross monthly per capita income of $650 or less
- Have an expected delivery date on or after 1 September 2025
- Have an existing antenatal appointment date at KidStart partner hospitals (KKH, NUH, SGH or SKH)
Know someone who could benefit from this programme? Family members and friends are welcome to apply on behalf of the family looking to join KidStart.
What’s in the Pregnant Mum and Baby Nutrition Programme prenatal care pack?
The prenatal care pack will include useful items and essentials like milk, chicken essence, a pregnancy pillow and a nursing shawl. Mums will also receive $300 worth of supermarket vouchers!
Postpartum support
After giving birth, mums will receive 10 days’ worth of confinement meals delivered during lunch and dinner. Along with their spouses, partners or caregivers, mums will also be invited to attend a prenatal and a postnatal workshop on mental wellness and baby budgeting. The workshops will end with a grocery shopping session at a nearby supermarket.
The mental wellness workshop aims to help new mothers better understand their own emotions toward the changes in welcoming a new family member, empowering them with skills and wellness practices to manage potentially overwhelming feelings. Spouses and partners who attend will also learn how they can better support mums during this period.
The baby budgeting part of the workshop will help parents find out more about existing financial support available, and how they can make better decisions about budgeting for the whole family.
Support for babies and toddlers till they turn 2 years old
As part of a pilot extension and enhancement to the programme, KidStart will also provide additional nutritional support for mummies and their little ones in the 10 July 2025 to 31 March 2026 enrolment period with a Breakfast for Little Champions and Transition to Solids Workshop.
What do you think, parents? We’re all for this initiative and hope it continues to highlight the importance of making pre- and postnatal care accessible to all mothers in Singapore!
