We’ve been on the eternal search for an activity that’s fun for kids but still gives the grown-ups proper Sunday vibes… and we found it at one of our favourite bars, of course.
Vanilla Guerilla: add it to your vocab list now, because it’s soon to be on high rotation in your household thanks to an awesome new kids’ workshop that’s popped up at Potato Head Folk. Three Buns, the creative foodies behind the menu at Potato Head Folk, are getting junior chefs to add their own twist to their signature dessert burger – think chocolate brioche bun and salted butterscotch sauce – to introduce families to all the fun to be had at 36 Keong Saik Road.
If, like us, you usually head straight to the rooftop bar, you probably didn’t know that Potato Head has an amazing family friendly space on its second floor. Expect the same whimsically painted walls and sculptures, but throw in some fun little burgers on legs, brightly coloured bunting and high chairs and you’ve got your new weekend hangout with the kids.
This is where Three Buns have set up shop for its new Kids Workshop Series. We’re a little late to the show on our visit, but Chef Gabriel has it all under control: On each tiny table is a chef’s hat and apron for the kids to use (and keep) and there’s an amazing spread of rainbow sprinkles, chocolate sauce, nuts and juicy berries to decorate the ice cream burgers with.
Yes there’s a bit of chaos, as you’d expect from a bunch of kids who have come for ICE CREAM BURGERS, but Chef Gabriel has the patience of a saint, and the little ones have been distracted with a supply of crayons and colouring-in sheets. I’m starting to think it’s a miracle that nobody’s made a dive for the sprinkles when the chocolate brioche buns arrive for the kids to get started. My littlest junior reporter didn’t get the memo about decorating the buns, and managed to wolf down a bun or two while nobody was looking. But the kids had a wild time: there was chocolate spreading, honey-dipping, strawberry chopping, nut sprinkling and hundreds and thousands everywhere. Alongside the foodie fun and the colouring in, there’s also face-painting and games. Best time ever.
The staff are completely up for playing with the kids and joining the fun – and the service is spot on and so friendly. Parents, this is your chance to kick back with a burger and a sneaky drink. I wrangled two boys solo and still managed to have a brilliant burger while it was still hot – hallelujah! We left with tummies full, happy kids and that oh-so-smug feeling that comes with finding something new and interesting for the kiddos that you loved too. Pencil me in for each month, please.
This workshop is best for kids age three to nine, and will be held once a month on Sundays at Potato Head Folk. The Vanilla Guerilla workshop by Three Buns is $25 per child; reservations are to be made directly with Potato Head Folk on 6327 1939. The next workshop dates are 10 January, 21 February and 20 March. For details on upcoming workshops and timings, visit Potato Head Folk, or follow Potato Head on Facebook.
This Christmas Eve, Potato Head Folk has partnered with Singapore Children’s Society to host a special Vanilla Guerilla workshop for the kids of Sunbeam Place – a home for children who have been abused, neglected and in need of protection, or whose parents are unable to provide proper care. A percentage of proceeds from each Rudolph Killah Aka Roast Face Killah burger purchased (available throughout December 2015) will benefit Singapore Children’s Society.
