Sweating in the tropics and looking for kid friendly deodorant in Singapore? Stop the pong with a natural deodorant that really works!
Ever thought about deodorant for kids? As your kiddo heads toward becoming a teenager, you start reading up on everything to do with puberty, and how to talk to them about sex, periods and pubic hair. Then one day, they go to give you a hug, and you sniff their hair as you usually do (or is that just me), and you are repulsed by the smell of them. That may be a little strong, but so can be the smell of a teenager’s body odour!
Living in the tropics, we are used to sweating profusely. Add to that developing hormones and a love of sport, and you have cause for the introduction of deodorant for kids, or your tween or teen. But how do you know which ones are safe, especially for kids with sensitive skin? We have scoured the island (and beyond) for natural, safe, teen-friendly deodorants that actually work. So you can go back to sneaking in a hug from your teenager again (and enjoying the smell of your kiddo once more!).
The best natural deodorants for kids, tweens and teens in Singapore
Do you know the difference between deodorant and antiperspirant? You guessed it, antiperspirant is designed to stop you from sweating, whereas deodorant neutralises the odour-causing bacteria. We don’t want to block the underarm ducts or mess with our kids’ hormones, so we lean towards natural deodorants that can keep our kiddos smelling fresh.
1. Coconut Matter MOOD deodorant for kids (and adults too!)
We have tried this range for ourselves, and can confirm it is gentle on the skin, smells great, and really works! There is lots to love about Coconut Matter deodorant, from the funky packaging that has cute life affirmations printed inside each pack to the fresh citrusy scents.
Our tween tried every single one and can confirm it’s not sticky, and she feels fresh all day. She has decided that Spring is her favourite deodorant for kids from Coconut Matter. With free worldwide shipping available, we’ll be reordering regularly!
2. Scoop Natural Deodorant
We’re big fans of Scoop Wholefoods. This store min Singapore has a huge range of nuts, seeds, snacks, oils and more, especially for those with allergies and the health conscious. But did you know they have their own brand of deodorant too? If you’re looking for a natural and plastic-free deodorant that actually works, then grab yourself a tin of Scoop deodorant.
Free from aluminium, synthetic ingredients, parabens, sulphates and any other nasties you can think of, this is high on our list as a great entry-level deodorant for the kiddos. Tapioca starch is used to help dry up excess moisture. Bicarbonate soda neutralises odour-causing bacteria. And the scent? A light blend of essential oils such as cinnamon, clove and chamomile is gender neutral and will keep the whole fam feeling and smelling fresh throughout the day! Usual retail price is $23.50 for a 60g tin.
3. Earth Mama natural deodorant
Available from Pupsik, the Earth Mama Mini Deodorant is available as a set of four mini cruelty-free deodorants, with all four flavours in one fun-filled box! The small size makes them travel-savvy and purse or school-bag friendly. There are citrusy scents of ginger-lime in the ‘Ginger Fresh’ deodorant and tangerine in the ‘Bright Citrus’ deodorant. There’s also a soothing soothing ‘Calming Lavender’ deodorant.
Our choice from this range for younger kiddos is the unscented ‘Simply Non-Scents Deodorant’. We love this as there are no overpowering smells, so kids are more likely to wear it! This formula was made for extra sensitive skin with the perfect balance of baking soda and magnesium. Just enough to work, not enough to hurt.
4. Jomingo aluminium-free plant-based deodorant for kids
This aluminium-free deodorant for kids by Jomingo is certified by the Natrue label as natural. Not just for kids, this deodorant is formulated for all skin types. The scent is of fresh, woody herbs with a hint of delicate sweet and floral fragrances.
Essential oils are extracted with steam distilled from the rosemary leaves and lavender flowers. These herbaceous scents may be a little mature for younger kiddos. Tweens will love the adorable packaging – no embarrassment in PE class when pulling this out of their school bag!
5. Kopari Natural Aluminium Free Coastal Deodorant
You’ll find Kopari at Sephora, and while it is not specifically a deodorant for kids, it ticks the boxes of being natural, and it really works. With lots of great reviews, this is a bit pricier than the others, but you can pick this up in-store in Singapore, so no need to wait for shipping! With the fresh fruity scent, you’ll want to stock up for yourself as well.
6. Jumping for JOI with this Malaysia-based natural deodorant and beauty brand
The reviews speak for themselves for JOI, a Malaysia-based beauty brand. ‘One of the best deodorants I’ve ever discovered on planet Earth! I was sceptical at first, but it has continuously proven itself above and beyond since my first purchase.’ We love real-life testimonials, so we’d be willing to give this one a try. They have a natural deodorant free of baking soda, recommended for sensitive skin, which is probably our choice for the kiddos!
7. Kid turned 8 and not smelling so great? Try this wicked-cool deodorant from Tom’s of Maine
If you’re on the hunt for a kid-friendly deodorant that does not contain aluminium, parabens or any other nasties, check out the fresh Summery scents from Tom’s of Maine. With a range of scents to suit the whole family available for delivery from iherb, we like the ‘wicked cool’ kids products available on Amazon. Product availability varies, but we recommend searching it out if you can – your tweens will thank you!
8. Crystal deodorants
As with the other deodorants on this list, crystal deodorants are natural and do not reduce sweat like an antiperspirant does. The purpose is to kill the bacteria under the arms that generates bad smells. There are a range of different brands you can try, from unscented pure crystal to scented crystal deodorants. Check out this informative video if you’re keen to understand more about how crystal deodorants work. Our Editor swears by Grace crystal deodorant, available on Shoppee. On her recommendation, we’re willing to give this a try as well!
9. Baking soda
Just one natural ingredient is all you need to stop the pong, according to another HoneyKids mum. Her husband recommends applying baking soda under your arms as soon as you’ve dried off after a shower to stop bacterial growth and reduce body odour. A good friend who is an athlete used to struggle with cysts caused by clogged ducts as chemical deodorants affected her lymph nodes, so she made the switch to baking soda and has never looked back! Cost effective and clean – win, win.
