From Jazz Bands to Young Investors Club, students are definitely spoilt for choice at North London Collegiate School (Singapore).
Aside from academic classes, co-curricular activities (CCAs) are also an important aspect of school life for every child. Not only does it allow students to develop their interests and gain new skills, but CCAs are also known to broaden students’ perspectives and shape their character. As part of the North London Collegiate School (NLCS) network, NLCS (Singapore) offers a wide variety of CCAs and enrichment programmes, ranging from academic-related clubs to passion-driven clubs and competitive sports. The school strives to create platforms for students to engage their passions, discover unknown hidden talents, and provide opportunities for leadership and personal growth within their areas of interest. As such, its CCA programme is deliberately designed to provide as broad a range of opportunities as possible, and to ensure the focus of all sessions remains on the scholarly development of its students.
CCAs are available for students throughout the school
The CCA and enrichment programmes at NLCS (Singapore) is broad and multifaceted. Not limited to student-led academic societies and sports clubs, students have access to academic lecture (known as McCabe lectures), Duke of Edinburgh International Award, Service programmes, and trips.
Over 150 CCAs take place across the school every week. Students in the Junior School, from as young as Kindergarten 2 onwards, participate in CCAs during the last period of their day (some of the sports opportunities push on till 3:30pm). In the Senior School, CCAs take place from 3:45pm to 4:45pm. The school also provides opportunities for students to engage with external academies for football, tennis, badminton, and basketball. On top of nurturing passion and talent, CCAs allow students the opportunity to interact with students from other classes and grades as well.
Academic societies are an important part of all NLCS schools. They provide students with the chance to engage in high-level academic discussion that goes far beyond the scope of the taught curriculum. All these societies are student-led with the support of a link teacher. Society activities revolve around academic discussion; and sometimes the debate of a discipline, or branch of it. Some of these societies also produce termly publications of articles written by the students themselves!
NLCS (Singapore) ensures that all programmes are carried out in world-class facilities
To achieve its enrichment and CCA vision, the school ensures that its state-of-the-art facilities live up to the exacting demands of its coaches, teachers, and foundation school in London. The facilities are also similar to its other sister campuses in South Korea and Dubai.
Some of the school’s star facilities include well-resourced music ensembles rooms and recording studio, music technology suite, black box drama studio, and a 700-seat auditorium for its music and performing arts-based programmes. As for sports, there’s a vast sports hall, climbing wall, 50m swimming pool, basketball and tennis courts, and a flood-lit AstroTurf football pitch. Students who are in technology and IT-based programmes also benefit from the school’s Computer Science robotics spaces. Overall, NLCS’ (Singapore) facilities really do support the creative and competitive endeavours of its inspirational teachers and coaches.
Students can expect more CCAs and enrichment programmes in the near future
As NLCS (Singapore) continues to grow, so does the breadth of interests and talents of its school community. The school actively recruits staff with a genuine passion for their subject areas, along with further passions and interests that will feed into its CCA programme. Recent additions include Competitive Coding Prep, LEGO Robotics, Photography, Videography, Scuba, Technical Theatre, and even Sign Language. The possibilities are endless for its current and prospective students.
The school is a member of the Athletic Conference of Singapore International Schools (ACSIS) and Federation of British International Schools in Asia. This means that NLCS’ (Singapore) students have opportunities to hone their skills through training and healthy competition, be it in Math, debating, or sports. In fact, NLCS’ (Singapore) U10 and U11 boys, as well as U11 girls are champions in the recent ACSIS football competitions! These wins are testament to the quality of the school’s coaching and its students’ growth mindset.
