Stand Up Paddle for Kids and Parents
We’re going to come right out and say it: stand up paddle boarding rocks (quite literally – we have a hard time staying upright!). Originally a mode of transportation for Hawaiian tribes, not only is this hot new sport a great workout – it trains the core muscles of the upper body and legs – it’s something fun that parents and energetic kids can do together. We’re sold! So check out these options, make a booking and prepare for some laughs now…
Trinity Ark
Local enterprises Trinity Ark, The Windsurfing Shop, and SUP Yoga Singapore have teamed up to offer personalized SUP lessons at Mana Mana Beach Club at East Coast Park. On top of lessons for adults (from $60 per person) and private lessons for children ($100, 6-12 years old), they offer parent & child packages ($100 per pair) that cater to tots as young as 3 years. Mum, if you’re a yoga fiend looking for a new challenge, check out their SUP yoga classes. Yes, really!
Once the little ones have mastered the SUP techniques, head back to The Windsurfing Shop for more. They rent out SUP boards at $30 per hour and $40 for two.
Pirate Stand Up Paddle Ahoy
The Windsurfing Shop is also running a fantastic summer holiday class specially for kids. Their short course is a combination of eco-education, ocean safety, and training in the art of SUP. For 2 hours kids will get to learn techniques and board–handling before taking to the water on their own to paddle solo. All for a very sensible $120 and 10% discount for friends and siblings. Skills like teamwork, motivation and leadership will come in to play too through sea-sport team relay games & friendly competitions. It’s running until 27June so get in fast to book. A minimum of 5 kids is required, with class sizes no bigger than 10.
Stand Up Paddling School
Founded by French adrenaline junkie and mother of two Isabelle Malique-Park, Stand Up Paddling School at Tanjong Beach Club has a SUP 101 class for beginners that covers all the basics and a SUP Advanced class. Lessons start from $60 per hour for both adults and children, from 8 years old and up. Other specialized classes here include SUP Yoga, as well as SUP Core, a combination of yoga, fitness, and Pilates.
When the kids have got the art of SUP down pat, board rentals at SUP School cost $40 an hour or $100 for half a day.
Constant Wind
Located off Changi Coast Road, Constant Wind is a one-stop sea sports centre with other activities like sailing, windsurfing, kayaking, and kite surfing. The SUP beginner class here costs $60 for 2 hours, after which you can progress to a one-day advanced course for $250 or try 4 different modules ($50-$80) like SUP in Bintan. Available for kids aged 9 and above.
Given the more isolated location, board rentals here come at friendlier prices of $20 per hour on weekdays, and $25 per hour on weekends and public holidays.
SeaBreeze Water-Sports
With Wavehouse Sentosa as home, SeaBreeze Water-Sports probably has the best location even though they don’t have SUP lessons on the menu. Board rentals are $30 per board per hour, and kids need to be at least 12 years old to do SUP unsupervised. Extend the fun with activities like banana boating, kayaking, wake boarding, and wearing water-propelled jetpacks (so 007).
