Meet and greet top language gurus of Stamford American International School at an exclusive Language Expert Panel to learn the benefits of language acquisition from a young age.
We already learnt how our kids can sprint their way to sporting success thanks to Stamford American International School’s first Expert Panel Series: Sports Coaching for Character and now you can hear great advice on language acquisition at its second event of the series, Expert Panel Series #2, Languages. Parents of keen little linguists (or the not-so-keen ones who may need a bit of encouragement) are welcome to come along to this friendly session: there’ll be many a wise word from four language experts, plus a useful Q&A session for your own burning questions. Come and say hello, hola or nǐ hǎo to the language gurus on 9 February.
As a school that welcomes students from around the globe, Stamford American International School recognises that kids can have a tough time dealing with an international move to Singapore. What really helps? Encouraging the continuation of mother tongue languages to help students stay connected to their home countries: moving across the world is a big deal! The Mother Tongue Program – which encompasses 12 languages including Hindi, Danish, Russian and Hebrew – is a parent-led scheme, supported by the school and all of its many resources and facilities.
Daily Mandarin or Spanish lessons
Have any of you ever tried picking up a new language as an adult? Well, we have and it’s a TOUGH gig! Did you know that each child who joins Stamford American – from the teeny tiny Early Years tots to the Elementary big kids – is taught either Mandarin or Spanish on a daily basis. Once the big kids are even bigger (from Grade 6), it’s time to up the ante with language lessons running for 80 minutes every other day. Learners are grouped according to proficiency levels to ensure every student gets the maximum benefit from their language learning experience.
The Bilingual Program
For students age three to 10 years who really love to soak up languages, the Bilingual Program offers a 50/50 exposure to both Mandarin and English across the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program at no additional cost! Students are taught by a bilingual teacher, who models bilingualism – allowing them to be fully engaged with each student’s progress and ability.
English as Additional Language (EAL) Program
If you’re new to Singapore and your kids (who are probably between five to 14 years) need a bit of extra love in the English language department, fear not! Stamford American aims to provide every student who needs an English proficiency boost access to the EAL Program, that helps your kiddos get up to speed with the English language curriculum. Two levels of English language instruction are offered as part of the EAL program, and that allows students to quickly and successfully access the curriculum.
Expert Panel Series #2: Languages – What you need to know
Learning a second (or even third!) language not only opens doors for kids both academically and socially, but also gives them a real appreciation of different cultures: which is super important for raising our globally-minded kids. The earlier they learn, the easier it will be, and this Expert Panel event will be looking at areas of language learning that can really benefit your child’s language skills.
There will be four language experts moderating the session and offering sound advice on everything from how to choose the right language program for your child, enrolling into the bilingual program and getting the lowdown on the differences between language classes, to useful tips on how to approach English when your little one is a non-native speaker. And don’t forget to have some questions lined up to find out what suits your child best!
You’ll also get the chance to join an open house tour to check out the facilities for yourself, and really get a feel for how happy life is for students of all ages at this school community.
Don’t forget to register for this super useful (and free) event!
