The Grange Institution snagged silver for the second time in the 2024 Singapore Education Awards!
For the second consecutive year, The Grange Institution has earned Silver as the Sustainable International School of the Year! This recognition reflects the school’s unwavering commitment to sustainability as a core part of its educational philosophy.
Located on a repurposed three-acre heritage campus from 1954, The Grange faced constraints creating structural enhancements in its efforts to be sustainable. In spite of this, the school continues to lead in sustainability initiatives, inspiring a love for the environment in its students.
How The Grange pioneers sustainability through education
This year, The Grange unveiled the Green Granger Trail, an immersive learning experience spanning five eco-zones on campus. These living classrooms allow students to explore over 100 varieties of flora, fruits and vegetables through touch, smell and observation. The trail exemplifies hands-on learning, fostering a deep connection with nature.
The school is also committed to creating impact on a global level. In mid-2023, The Grange launched the Grow With The Grange initiative, planting a tree for every student. With 114 trees already planted in Sumatra and Zambia, the program aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), offsetting 2,508 kg of CO2, creating 28 hours of community work, and promoting gender equality with 44% of the workers involved being female!
Nurturing young environmental leaders
To further encourage eco mindfulness, The Grange’s Year 6 students took charge of a school-wide composting initiative – they built a compost bin from recycled wood, attended workshops, and educated peers from the school’s preschool to primary levels. Their efforts yielded the school’s first batch of compost in September, enriching the eco-garden and showcasing the power of student-led sustainability projects!
This initiative not only nurtures environmental stewardship but also fosters leadership qualities in students and shows them the ways they can make a difference.
Forging global sustainability partnerships
That’s not all! The school also does its best to make global connections in its efforts for a sustainable world. Currently, The Grange is exploring a partnership with a leading multinational food and biotechnology corporation, with hopes to engage students in global sustainability efforts through research on reducing food waste and carbon footprints. Hence, through co-curricular activities, camps, and real-world R&D projects, students gain invaluable insights into sustainable food production.
Kudos to The Grange Institution for leading by example and inspiring a greener future!
