This thing to do in Bangkok with kids turns a historic library into a giant treasure hunt filled with pre-loved books and nostalgic finds.
While Neilson Hays Library is usually known as a peaceful historic library where you can spend a calm afternoon reading, this thing to do in Bangkok with kids gives you the opportunity to shop for more books.
Taking place from 16–24 May (excluding 18 May), this bi-annual book Sale returns with shelves filled with English and Thai books, magazines, CDs and DVDs starting from just B20.
Held twice a year, usually in mid-May and mid-November, the event has become a favourite tradition among Bangkok’s book-loving community. This May edition also marks the first book sale of 2026.
During the sale, the historic space transforms into a giant book hunt where you can easily lose track of time searching through tables of pre-loved and ex-library books, discovering unexpected titles along the way.
Whether your kids are into colourful picture books, fantasy adventures or fun educational reads, there’s a good chance they’ll find something they’ll want to take home.
What is the Neilson Hays Library Bi-Annual Book Sale?

This thing to do in Bangkok with kids is one of the city’s most anticipated community book sales, bringing together readers, families and book collectors inside a cultural landmark that has been part of Bangkok since 1869.
The sale features hundreds of pre-loved and ex-library books across a wide range of categories, including fiction, non-fiction, children’s books, Thai-language titles and more.
Because stock is replenished daily throughout the event, every visit feels a little different. Most people often return more than once to see what new titles have appeared on the shelves.
Inside the experience: what families can expect

Here are some of the highlights you can look forward to:
Affordable books for every age
From children’s storybooks and young readers to thrillers, cookbooks and history titles, there’s something for every kind of reader – without spending a fortune.
A treasure-hunt feeling
Since books are rotated throughout the sale, browsing feels more like discovering hidden gems than shopping at a regular bookstore.
Nostalgic finds beyond books
Beyond the shelves of novels and children’s stories, there are also magazines, CDs and DVDs scattered throughout the sale. For many kids today, these are items they may have never properly seen or used before, which makes the experience feel a little like stepping back in time while exploring pieces of the past.
A beautiful historic setting

The sale takes place inside one of Bangkok’s most architecturally significant libraries, complete with high ceilings, classic wooden shelves and old-world charm that makes the whole experience feel special.
Eco-friendly shopping
Limited-edition Neilson Hays tote bags will be available, though you are encouraged to bring their own reusable bags as well.
A chance to support the community
All proceeds help preserve the historic library building and support community programmes including children’s activities, exhibitions and literary events.
