Worried that your kid’s spending too much time indoors? This school programme takes learning outside
In a tech-savvy world where everyone’s dependent on phones and laptops, kids are spending less time outdoors. But what if we told you there’s a school programme that’s bringing learning outdoors? Oh yes, Tanglin Trust School has just launched a new Forest School Programme – an outdoor-based learning model for nursery-age kids – and we can’t wait to check it out!
What’s Tanglin’s Forest School Programme all about?
The programme weaves the great outdoors into your child’s curriculum by simply using nature – in this case, a lush space within the school grounds – as “classrooms”. Your little bub will have a newfound appreciation of nature while developing academic, creative, personal and social skills along the way. The programme will be conducted by qualified level 3 teachers and facilitators, with safely managed and age-appropriate activities so you won’t have to worry about a thing.
Learning outside yields great development skills
Tanglin’s Forest School model taps into Friluftsliv (literally translates to “fresh-air life”), a Scandinavian way of living where a connection to nature and an active lifestyle takes centre stage. This makes room for holistic growth and encourages play, exploration and hands-on experiences in a natural setting. All these will gradually enhance your child’s physical development and deepen their academic learning.
Tanglin Trust School is no stranger to outdoor learning. This exciting model complements the school’s current co-curricular forest adventure programme where Reception to Year 2 children get acquainted with outdoor learning.
“It’s a learning approach that we truly believe in, especially during these challenging times, where children’s activities have mostly moved indoors due to safe-distancing measures. Tanglin’s Forest School Programme is a welcome alternative for children to be active, to learn and to be immersed in the great outdoors. Our team here at Tanglin Trust School developed it to encourage discovery, hands-on learning, collaboration and allow children to explore the environment at the same time. We are really excited to roll it out!” says Paula Craigie, Head of Infant School at Tanglin.
