We love a power suit, but it can be hard to dress corporately and feel business-confident in our steamy Singapore humidity. Enter FREY., a female-founded brand based in Hong Kong that offers tailored fashion (in breathable fabrics!) for modern women who demand the same quality that men have enjoyed for years. We meet the woman behind this beautiful brand.
It’s not often we come across a womenswear brand in Singapore that’s uber-focused on providing well made, tailored pieces for the female form. And as mums ourselves (whose daily uniforms comprise of tights, tees and comfy co-ords) it can be a nice change to get dressed up in empowering casual suits! Enter FREY, founded by Singapore-based designer Frederieke van Doorn who started the women’s tailoring brand to offer the same level of quality long reserved for men. Frederieke aims to respond to the growing need for change within fashion – to offer high quality clothes that are both comfortable and chic.
For nearly two decades, Frederieke built her career in men’s tailoring at world-renowned chain, Suitsupply. It was here that she honed her skills, mastering fabric, construction, and learning the inner workings of the fashion industry. The industry-wide slowdown of 2020 prompted her to reflect on what was missing, and what could be done better, especially for women.
Designed with modern women’s needs in mind, FREY combines empowerment with ease. We love that they offer in-house tailoring, made-to-order options, and AI-powered measurement technology, so the fit is perfection. After first opening in Hong Kong, we can now shop in person in Singapore, at the FREY pop-up in Design Orchard!
1. Tell us a little about yourself, the places you’ve lived, and your career to date!

I’ve always been drawn to the intersection of fashion, craftsmanship, and personal expression. Having lived in both The Netherlands and Asia, I’ve been fortunate to experience diverse cultures that shaped my aesthetic sensibilities. For almost twenty years, my career was in men’s tailoring, working for Suitsupply. I lived and breathed fabric, design, sharp tailoring, production runs, emerging trends, and the industry’s market mechanisms.
2020 had an unprecedented impact on fashion brands and retailers. The industry’s slowdown gave me time to reflect on my career and where I wanted to head next. I envisioned a brand that would provide women with the same high-quality business attire that is typically offered by men’s brands. At the same time, the disruption caused by the pandemic heightened the urgency for reform within the fashion industry. I recognised the need for change and wanted to take an active part in it. I decided to launch a women’s brand that caters to the distinct needs and aspirations of female tailoring. I dreamed of a brand where I could create a sense of magic, the kind that arises when a woman feels both empowered and at ease in what they wear.
2. When did you realise tailoring and fashion would be your life’s work? Was there a particular moment or person that inspired you?

The realisation came early. I was fascinated by how clothing could transform not just appearance, but confidence. The name “FREY” comes from my own name, Frederieke. FREY represents freedom. Freedom of movement, of expression, and of individuality. It’s about tailoring that empowers rather than restricts. Each piece we create is infused with this philosophy, aiming to make every woman feel both strong and unique.
The journey to establishing FREY was not without its challenges, but the vision of building a brand that resonates with authenticity kept me inspired. I wanted FREY to be more than just a label. I envisioned it as a movement towards redefining how women can dress for success in any environment. By focusing on impeccable craftsmanship and committing to sustainable practices, we strive to honor the artistry of tailoring while meeting the evolving needs of modern women. FREY is a celebration of the timeless and the contemporary, a bridge between tradition and innovation. It’s about creating not just clothes, but an experience, one that empowers women to express their true selves confidently.
3. Who is a FREY woman? Who do you create for, and what are the driving forces behind your designs?

The FREY woman is confident, discerning, and quietly powerful. She values quality over quantity and seeks pieces that move seamlessly between her professional and personal worlds. FREY designs are driven by the idea of effortless sophistication, and clothes that I want to wear myself. I alway look for pieces that are structured yet fluid, refined yet comfortable. Every article of clothing we make is made to celebrate the wearer’s individuality rather than overshadow it.
The FREY woman embodies a modern style that is both timeless and adaptable. Our designs aim to empower a woman to express her true self, whether she’s leading a board meeting, attending a social event, or simply enjoying a moment of leisure. We craft each piece with the finest materials and meticulous attention to detail, ensuring that our collections not only meet but exceed the expectations of the FREY woman.
4. What are your style tips for dressing comfortably yet professionally in humid weather?

The key is breathable fabrics and thoughtful layering. I gravitate toward lightweight wools, linens, and cotton blends that hold structure without trapping heat. We buy our fabrics from prestigious Italian mills and purchase premium deadstock fabric from luxury brands. We avoid using any polyester, ensuring you remain comfortable throughout the day. More importantly, you won’t experience the sweating and odour often associated with plastic materials!
A well-cut jacket in an unlined or half-lined construction can instantly elevate a look without feeling heavy. Neutral tones and natural fibres not only look polished but also age beautifully in tropical climates.
5. What are the designs you are most proud of or excited about in your latest collection?

All of our collections focus on modular tailoring, which means individual pieces can work together or separately and adapt to different occasions. We believe in versatility without compromising on style. Our designs are meticulously crafted to mix and match, so you can create numerous looks from a few key pieces. Whether it’s a tailored jacket that can be dressed up for a meeting or down for a casual outing, or a pair of trousers that seamlessly transitions from day to night, you can style every item multiple ways. This approach not only simplifies your wardrobe, but also supports sustainable fashion. Each piece in the collection is designed with thoughtful details and a timeless aesthetic, ensuring it can remain a part of your wardrobe for years to come!
I am very proud of our stunning jackets, that feature working cuffs and inside pockets for added functionality. I am a huge fan of pockets, and providing practical solutions without compromising style. Our pieces are created with generous seam allowances so they can be easily altered, allowing for a perfect fit as your needs or preferences evolve over time.
One of my favourite suits from our collection is the vanilla white three-piece suit. I love its versatility. This set allows for endless combinations. You can pair the waistcoat with jeans, layer the jacket over a dress, or combine the tailored trousers with a simple tee for a chic yet laid-back look.
6. How has your relationship with fashion changed as you’ve grown?
At 20, fashion was about experimentation, a way to explore identity and creativity. Now, it’s about refinement and purpose. I’ve learned that true style lies in authenticity. Fashion, to me, is no longer about trends but about longevity. This is why I am intent on creating pieces that endure both in quality and relevance. As I’ve evolved, my relationship with fashion has deepened into a commitment to sustainability and conscious consumption. The journey has taught me the power of clothing as a form of self-expression and empowerment. Through FREY, I strive to offer women the opportunity to embrace their individuality, crafting clothes that become cherished staples in their wardrobes for many years to come.
7. What do you find to be the most challenging aspects of managing FREY?

Balancing creativity with business demands is always a challenge. From a design perspective, I want to push boundaries; as a founder, I must ensure sustainability and growth. I overcome this by surrounding myself with a strong team and staying grounded in our core values. These are craftsmanship, integrity, and timeless design. Every decision, from sourcing to production, is guided by these principles.
Navigating challenges requires a delicate balance between passion and practicality. It’s about finding harmony between the artistic vision and the realities of running a business. I also believe in the importance of continuous learning and adaptability. The fashion industry is ever-evolving, and staying attuned to changes and innovations is crucial for both survival and success.
Moreover, I focus on building meaningful relationships with our customers and listening to their feedback. Their insights often inspire new ideas and help refine our collections. It’s incredibly rewarding to see our designs resonate with women and become an integral part of their lives. Ultimately, managing FREY is a journey of constant growth and reflection. It’s about striving for success while remaining true to our mission, to create clothing that empowers women and celebrates their individuality.
8. Who is in your circle of mentors, fashion inspiration, or support network you rely on?

I’m fortunate to have mentors who’ve guided me through both creative and entrepreneurial challenges. My circle includes fellow entrepreneurs, business owners, and clients who’ve become friends. Their feedback and support keep FREY evolving with authenticity.
I draw inspiration from industry pioneers and visionaries who have shaped fashion with their innovative ideas and commitment to quality. This network is invaluable, providing diverse perspectives and encouragement that fuel my passion and drive. Being part of a community that shares similar values is empowering. It allows for collaboration and exchange of ideas, which is essential in an industry as dynamic as fashion.
Together, we work toward a shared vision of a more sustainable and inclusive fashion landscape. In this ever-evolving journey, I am constantly reminded of the importance of staying connected with those who inspire and challenge me. Their insights and experiences enrich my own, enabling me to navigate the complexities of running a brand like FREY.
9. What are your future plans for the business, and in life?
The future of FREY is focused on enhancing our footprint in Asia and online, all while preserving our artisanal heritage. We plan to expand our presence by collaborating with more boutiques in Singapore and Shanghai.
In life, I aspire to continue learning and growing, both personally and professionally. I hope to inspire others through FREY, encouraging a more mindful approach to fashion that values quality, ethics, and authenticity. Ultimately, my goal is to create a legacy that empowers women and leaves a positive mark on the industry. FREY will always be about creating with intention. Pieces that tell stories of care, precision, and individuality.
