If the viral Netflix show Adolescence left you with more questions than answers, you’re not alone. From the rise of the Manosphere to the coded language teens use online, today’s digital world is complex—and constantly shifting. So fast that parents are not even aware. In this episode of Parenting Playbook, we speak with Shem Yao, Head of TOUCH Cyber Wellness to unpack today’s digital realities and online subcultures that are shaping our children’s beliefs and behaviours – for better or for worse. He shares how parents of teens can connect meaningfully with their children, spot red flags, guide them to online safety, and think critically in an ever-connected world.
Shem Yao leads TOUCH Cyber Wellness under the TOUCH Community Services, delivering digital and media literacy programmes to schools, communities, and corporations. Since 2008, he has reached over 400,000 participants through 700+ talks and workshops. A certified Triple P trainer, Shem supports parents in understanding their children’s digital lives and has spent over 20 years working with youths in various organisations and churches. He plays a key role in developing community-based digital wellness initiatives and parenting education.
