We spoke to ICS’ new principals to find out exactly what kids and parents can look forward to at this school!
On the hunt for a K4-12 school for your kiddos? Looking for a system that teaches an American curriculum? With exciting developments and comprehensive offerings, we think International Community School (Singapore) should be on your list. Plus, we spoke with the new principals to hear more about what you and your kids can look forward to.
Yes, ICS has brought in two new principals with a wealth of experience to lead the school in this pivotal time, where the pandemic has warranted many changes. Parents, you’ll be pleased to know that the school has been allowed to welcome its students back on campus, with strict social distancing measures in place. We hear that the staff are also well-prepared with an online curriculum in case they have to take classes back to virtual learning!
Nurturing bright young minds
Fostering a love of learning in young minds, ICS boasts a thoughtfully designed curriculum with small class sizes. “It is a supportive and caring community where everyone feels connected and special,” says the elementary principal, Lance Kershner.
“With the support of our talented and creative teaching staff, our students learn to think deeply about their learning.” Aside from math, English, science and social studies classes, ICS also offers Bible class as part of its mission to teach a strong curriculum with a Biblical worldview.
To add a dose of fun into the kids’ day, music, arts, physical education and other classes are included too. This mix of subjects provides a holistic education that engages the little ones academically and creatively – and it makes them look forward to school even more!
Setting kids up for success
In middle and high school at ICS, the teachers further advance the students’ social development with a dedication to instilling global perspectives. But what about AP scores, we hear you ask? Middle and high school principal Darryl Harding has the answers to that too:
“We are well ahead of the international average on every single AP test our students took last year. As a school, we averaged four (out of five) for over 80 tests, which actually translates to over USD 84,000 in college savings.” Past graduates have gone to some of the top schools in the United States, Canada, the UK, Australia, and right here in Singapore.
Academics aside, part of the reason why students love the school is because they get to develop their skills in extracurricular activities too. Aside from the excellent community and academic results, the ICS’ sports teams are one to beat. “Despite our modest size, our athletic teams (like basketball and volleyball) are able to go toe-to-toe with every other school on the island!”

Finally, we’ll leave you with Darry Harding’s philosophy on education: “Every child, under the right circumstances, can learn. It is up to us educators to create and maintain those circumstances in order to ensure that this is achieved.”
