We dish expert insights from Dr Mohana from Parkway East Paediatric Clinic on childhood allergies and treatments.
As parents, we’re always caring for our child’s health, looking out for any signs of a cold, allergy or other issues. So, to help shed some much-needed light on one of the biggest health complaints in children, we sought the help of Dr Mohana from Parkway East Paediatric Clinic. She tells us all we need to know about childhood allergy symptoms, plus some helpful treatments for the kiddos.
How are allergies tested?
Dr Mohana Rajakulendran specialises in treating allergy conditions in children. She begins by identifying the problematic allergen with a blood test or a quick (just 15 to 30 minutes) skin prick test. The skin prick test immediately detects any reaction upon exposure to an allergen. And don’t worry, she’s a caring and experienced doctor who will put your kiddos at ease through it all!
How are allergies treated in kids?
Medications can help with alleviating childhood allergy symptoms, and Dr Mohana specifically chooses medications that reduce any long term side effects in children.
For food allergies, staying away from the trigger foods is key! But if your child accidentally ingests an allergen, she recommends immediately giving them an oral antihistamine, or seeking medical help for more severe symptoms.
Does your child have an issue with dust mites? Dr Mohana also offers dust mite immunotherapy as treatment for allergic rhinitis. This is one of the most common allergies she sees in children, and she’s well-versed in managing it!
