As part of our junior reporter series, we asked five-year-old Inaya to share her thoughts about the art class she attended at Canvas Ark @ SAFRA Choa Chu Kang! With classes for kids aged four to 12 years old, Canvas Ark has been teaching art to kids in Choa Chu Kang and Toa Payoh for years now.

Junior reporter: Trying out the Explorer art class at Canvas Ark @ SAFRA
My mommy told me I was going to try a new art class and I was really excited. I usually have art enrichment in school, but this was something different and I was a little nervous to try something new this time!
At the art studio, I was excited to see all the art on the walls. I really liked one of the artworks there – it was a ‘Monsters Inc’ painting where Sully was hiding behind a ‘door’ which can open and close. It looks fun!
I entered the class with three other classmates and we introduced ourselves after Teacher Elycia welcomed us. She asked the class, “Has anyone watched the movie, ‘Up’?” and I said, “Me! I’ve watched it before!”
We started by drawing the house with pencils. Tracing with the black marker afterwards was not easy because the house that I drew was very big. I also added details on my house because I wanted to make it look cool. Teacher Elycia helped me at some parts of the tracing.
I loved hearing the music in the class. I vaguely recognised one of the songs, then I asked my mommy, “Mommy what is this song?” And she said it’s an ‘instrumental’ version of How Far I’ll Go from the movie ‘Moana’!
I was excited to paint as I’ve used such paint before, which needs to be mixed with some water before colouring in our drawings.
Purple is one of my favourite colours. I used purple, red and orange for my painting, and Teacher Elycia also taught us about mixing certain colours to get new colours – like mixing blue and yellow to make green, and red and blue to make purple.
After learning about colour mixing, I completed my drawing. I went about drying my painting with a hairdryer so that I could bring it home safely without smudging paint on myself.
After that, I needed to cut out my house and balloons to attach each of them to yarn ball strings to show that my house could ‘fly’. It was a little difficult to cut, so Teacher Elycia assisted me to move my hands so I wouldn’t accidentally cut myself. She was very patient with me.
I am very happy with my art and was excited to bring it home to show my family, friends and school teachers. I enjoyed the class with Teacher Elycia. She was very nice and helpful. I would like to go for the class again!
