Of course, a great book is so much more than a simple distraction – it allows us to take a peek into fantastical worlds, examine extraordinary lives and situations in depth. It’s 1969 in New York and there’s a shooting. But this book is more than just that. It’s a revelation on race, religion and survival, set in a tumultuous time with characters who seem unconnected at first, but whose lives become more intertwined in the end.
Pretty Things: A Novel, by Janelle Brown
A grifter and heiress are brought together by the scam of a lifetime. Throw in social media, a whole lotta money and a shady boyfriend, and you’ve got a read that you won’t be able to put down.
Writers & Lovers, by Lily King
At 31, Casey is just trying to make it and finally finish her novel. While doing so, she’s also dating two very different men, and can’t decide who’s the right fit for her. On top of that, she has medical issues to deal with. All aspiring writers will no doubt find this read particularly relatable.
Sigh, Gone: A Misfit’s Memoir of Great Books, Punk Rock, and the Fight to Fit In, by Phuc Tran
For anyone who’s ever felt like they don’t belong, this book is for you. In 1975, Phuc and his family immigrate to the US and settle in a small town in Pennsylvania. A poignant coming-of-age story that’s also heartbreaking and funny, you’ll find Phuc’s story very moving.
The City We Became: A Novel (The Great Cities Trilogy), by N.K. Jemsin
An awesome homage to The Big Apple, this book is packed with creepy, mysterious love and harshness, just like the city itself. The City We Became is one wild ride, and we’re here for all the contemporary sci-fi-ness of it.
Oona Out of Order, by Margarita Montimore
Are you a fan of books about time travel? You’ll love this one. It’s 1982 and Oona is about to turn 19 and make a very important decision about her future. But she faints and finds herself 32 years in the future in her 51 year old body. She finds out that she has a condition where every new year, she leaps forward or backward in time. How does she make it work? Read the book to find out!
The Mercies, by Kiran Millwood Hargave
On Christmas Eve in 1617, in the Norwegian island of Vardo, a crazy storm kills every man in the village. The women left behind need to learn to fend for themselves, and some do it in more unusual ways than others. When a new leader arrives with his young wife and tries to take control of Vardo, he faces something he’s never experienced: strong-willed, independent women. Yas!
