News flash: art exhibitions can be kid-friendly too. If you’ve been thinking about bringing the kiddos to an art gallery or showcase, consider this your sign to do so, stat. We’ve also prepped some tips for you to get them talking about art right here.
Think art galleries and exhibitions are too boring for the kiddos? Think again. Children are known to have the wildest and most vivid imaginations, so you might be surprised by what your kids might have to say about a painting or sculpture.
We love art at HoneyKids, and we also enjoy bringing your little ones to the many galleries and art exhibitions around Singapore. And trust us when we say this: the kids absolutely enjoyed themselves every single time.
So if you’re planning your first visit to an art exhibition with your kids, here are some tips to make this artsy outing a memorable and fun one for everyone in the fam.
1. Prep the kids about your upcoming visit

Personally, I find that discussing upcoming trips and family outings with my preschooler is a great way to get them into the mood. Talk about where you’ll be heading to as a family, what you’re all going to see, and if there’s any expected behaviours — for instance, needing to speak quietly, walk slowly, and so on.
I’d tell my child we’ll be going to a gallery to see lots of beautiful pictures; or we’re going to an exhibition where there’ll be sculptures made from mini lightbulbs. This usually gets them really excited and prepped for the trip.
2. Let them navigate through the exhibition or gallery
“I want to do it.” You’ve probably heard this many times at home, especially if you have a toddler. It’s a common childhood development that we should encourage; with some guidance, of course.
You can hand them the programme booklet or gallery map, invite them to lead the way and “go on an art adventure” together. This allows them to experience the exhibition and gallery at their own pace and in a way that makes most sense to them. Plus, it’s great to see things from a child’s point-of-view sometimes!
3. Talk about the art pieces through elements they’re familiar with
You don’t need to talk about art styles if your children aren’t familiar with it; you can always start with something that they’re familiar with. For example, ask about the colours and shapes. Questions like “how many different colours and shapes do you see in this painting?” or “how do the colours make you feel?” may sound simple, but they’re good starting points to get kids to engage and appreciate art.

Pro-tip: You can bring up the artist if you think your child may relate to their stories. Local exhibitions like Shaping Hearts, Singapore’s largest inclusive arts festival that’s organised by North East Community Development Council, is happening this 12-27 September. It features artwork created by persons with disabilities. Each of these artists have a unique story of their own which influences their artwork. Spark a discussion with the kiddos by sharing the artists’ stories with them (you can read the bio attached to their artwork).
4. Don’t miss out on children’s programmes

Some galleries and exhibitions have programmes or activity booklets for children. These aren’t just entertainment; they’re usually designed according to the exhibition’s theme, with elements from the artworks on display.
The upcoming Shaping Hearts festival at Punggol Digital District has kids’ programmes like Playdate @ PDD, where children get to wander, play, and explore four zones filled with activities prepared by local creators, youth groups, and community groups.
5. Let them get creative!

The little ones will be so inspired after seeing all the different artworks. So don’t forget to bring their drawing kit, or let them join the arts and crafts activities at the exhibition, if any. It’s super rewarding to see their creative juices flow, translating what they saw and experienced onto paper – another masterpiece to decorate your home with!
Inspired? There’s a family-friendly arts festival that you can visit soon.

Now that you’re feeling confident about bringing the kids to an art exhibition, we’ve got a great one to recommend visiting. Shaping Hearts is happening this 12 to 27 September at Punggol Digital District, complete with artworks on display and activities for the whole family to participate in.
You’ll get to check out the amazing artworks created by persons with disabilities, proving that art knows no boundaries and everyone is capable of creating something beautiful. Kids can take part in weekend activities like DIY art magnets, mosaic tiles, lockets, charms, and more at the festival too.
Plus, you can even shop for paintings and bring home a piece (or two) that you like. Rest assured that the proceeds from the sale go towards supporting the artists in their artistic journeys. More importantly, you’re telling the artists that their works matter – a lovely message that the little ones can learn from too.
Mark your calendars, don’t miss this year’s Shaping Hearts festival!
