We talk to Shriya Narula and Rajiv Narula about their experiences at Global Indian International School East Coast. For them, the school has helped their children settle and grow...
Making the decision on where to send your child to school is never an easy process. As parents, we want to ensure that our children’s educational goals, as well as their interests are nurtured. We aim to get the best of all worlds, because after all, schools play an important role in raising our children too. Today, we talked to Shriya Narula and Rajiv Narula about why they believe the Global Indian International School East Coast was the best choice for them and their two children.
Tell us about the children you have attending the school?
Our children, Karan and Riya currently attend Global Indian International School East Coast. Karan is in the 9th grade and Riya is in the 2nd grade. Karan is part of the school’s Model United Nations while Riya loves art and taekwondo.
How has the school lived up to your expectations?
They say, “It takes a village to raise a child”. And we learnt the meaning of this age-old saying in the real sense, with our move from New Delhi to Singapore. Our biggest concern was how to get our children adjusted and comfortable with the new environment.
As parents, we are pleased to say, that the school has been an inherent part of our ‘village’ – the teachers and staff received our children into the GIIS family and helped them settle and grow.
What were the most important factors for you in selecting a school?
One of the key factors is the curriculum that the school follows. GIIS follows the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) curriculum that provides continuity between the schools in India and Singapore. Another was whether or not the school had a balanced approach towards academics and extracurricular activities. We also look at how a school is able to adapt to modern teaching methodologies, which is especially important in today’s ever-changing online environment.
What advice would you give other parents trying to choose a school?
We believe that the quest to find the right school for your child doesn’t have a ‘one-size-fits-all” kind of solution… what works for one, may not work for another. We find that it is best to list and prioritize the key deliberations, assess the available options and choose the school that makes the most sense.
What do you value most about the school?
We value the fact that the school is so driven in providing a vibrant learning environment for the children to walk into each day. We love how the teachers are so passionate and, patient, and how they encourage children to explore their interests. We also appreciate the comprehensive curriculum and how it provides a strong balance between academics and extracurricular activities.
What has your experience of the school bus service been like (if used)?
Our children are using the school bus service and it has been a very comfortable arrangement for us.
Are you satisfied with the level of communication you receive from the school and how they engage parents?
Yes, we are very happy with the communications we get from the school. There is a lot of proactive engagement. Additionally, the school has been utilizing social media very effectively.
How much homework is expected of your children?
We are very satisfied with the content and level of homework that the students are given. Our younger child gets worksheets twice a week and the work can be done at a comfortable pace. We appreciate how the teachers of the higher levels put in the extra effort to make worksheets for the students and give them additional resources for further learning.
