Singapore Zoo has announced its new icon is a relative of the beloved Ah-Meng. Want to support the Zoo's conservation efforts? Join Safari Zoo Run 2016 and enjoy some family fun...
Singapore Zoo is one of the world’s best – and its one of our favourite spots for spending a day with the kids (check out our full guide to visiting Singapore Zoo!). Now there’s even more reason to hang out with the animals – not only is there a baby boy giraffe to meet, a new star is coming! The arrival of a female orangutan has been announced, and she’s a relative of Singapore’s beloved Ah-Meng, who passed away in 2008 at age 48 and remains a local icon.
Dubbed as the world’s most famous urangutan, Ah-Meng was renowned for her love of durians (so Singaporean) and devotion to her zookeeper. She mingled with celebrities from Liz Taylor to Michael Jackson and was an award-winning tourism and conservation ambassador – who remembers going for breakfast at the zoo to meet her?
Rumour has it Singapore Zoo’s new star has similar lovely eyes, and the same fondness for durian, so she’ll be right at home here! Watch this space for more news on her debut, and in the meantime, support the zoo and its conservation efforts by joining Safari Zoo Run 2016 on 26 and 28 February. Keen runners can race 5.5k or 10k tracks through animal exhibits and scenic paths through Singapore Zoo and Night Safari, while families can take part in 2.5km or 5.5km dashes. Afterwards, check out carnival festivites, meet more animal mascots and enjoy more family fun. Registrations close 31 January.
