A clever carnival for kids in Singapore: family fun at the Canadian International School STEAM Fair

save article

Every parent in Singapore knows the struggle of finding ways to keep the children entertained in a meaningful way. We’re all about having fun – and loads of it – but if the kids are keeping their minds ticking while they’re at it, then we’ve hit the jackpot. Now this family day out, we know is a winner: the truly awesome STEAM Fair at Canadian International School is back on Saturday 22 April, 2017! If you went last year, you’ll thank us for the heads up. It’s a day of fun, innovation, science and family bonding you won’t want to miss – and everyone is invited!

When we say fair, we’re not talking about a cake stall and an information stand. Oh, no, no my friend. This is the fair to end all fairs, the crème de la crème of action-packed days out with your family. Check out this neat video of last year’s super popular CIS STEAM Fair.

Here’s a quick round-up of what you can expect this year. We’re more than a little excited…

Small people are happiest when exploring their natural environment – and CIS has certainly nailed the concept of outdoor learning. Just take a look at their new Outdoor Discovery Centre at the Tanjong Katong Campus.

Amazing STEAM activities are in store at the Outdoor Discovery Centre, from crafting a giant spider web city using twine, to sculpting masterpieces from oversized colourful blocks of ice, and learning early math skills through water play in the mud kitchen. The kiddos will have such a blast that they won’t realise how much they’re learning. Expect to hear a chorus of “Just five more minutes, please?” when you suggest it’s home time. We’ve hung out here and seen the kids in action. We know.

Hop on a ride together!
Little ones can explore the amazing Outdoor Discovery Centre.
Let the kids construct and play.
Get a fun lesson in the art of speed...
Join a problem-solving project...

There are some seriously cool activities on offer sure to entice and engage older children. Kick off the day with a visit to the STEAM centre to test out some of the latest high-tech hacks – 3D printing and laser cutting is sure to get everyone’s pulses racing!

Big minds and little hands will be kept busy designing and flying aerodynamic paper planes, circuit building with electronic littleBits building blocks, mastering code to control robots, designing and building the roller coaster of their dreams and getting crafty with clay modelling and bracelet making.

We love how all of the events are carefully planned to challenge the kids to collaborate, take risks and to think creatively and critically. You are seeing the beauty of STEAM in action!

Honestly, when our kids are happy, we’re happy. Seeing their beaming little faces when they successfully try something new or witness cool stuff is priceless. And, full disclosure, we WILL be joining in on most of the activities with our kids (it’s allowed, we checked!).

Soak in the festival vibe as you browse over 70 stalls at the global bazaar, where you’ll pick up unique jewellery, funky clothing, gifts and curios. Grab a drink and some cotton candy while you enjoy a spot of live music from the talented CIS musicians. Why not treat the kids to a free carnival ride or two (the Gyrospin, pictured above, is our top pick), and we know you’ll want to try your hand at the hilarious dunk the teacher!

It really would be a shame not to take full advantage of the massages on offer from the lovely people at the Singapore Association of the Visually Handicapped. Just saying…

We hear you saying – what is STEAM? It’s a hugely popular global interdisciplinary teaching approach that stands for Science, Technology, Entrepreneurship (or Engineering), Arts and Mathematics.

STEAM is a way for kids to apply their knowledge, flex their problem-solving skills and apply them to real-life situations – all essential for when they go out into the world to make their mark! CIS introduces the STEAM philosophy early to all of its students, in a fun and interesting way. And, from grade one, students experiment, create and invent in the state-of-the-art makerspace rooms with cutting edge technologies like 3D printers and laser cutters. It’s just another example of how CIS is at the forefront of innovative education.
