Forest therapy is inspired by the Japanese practice of Shinrin-Yoku, which translates to “forest bathing.” Studies have demonstrated a wide array of health benefits, especially in the cardiovascular and immune systems, and for stabilizing and improving mood and cognition.
Forest therapy/forest bathing is a relational practice that brings people into deeper intimacy with natural places and an emphasis on cultivating a relationship with the earth. In a facilitated forest therapy session, there is a clearly defined sequence of guided invitations that provides structure to the experience, while embracing the many opportunities for creativity and discovery offered by nature.
The paddle-based forest therapy experience may be conducted on kayak or stand-up paddleboard in a reservoir in a coastal environment. The session will begin with an introduction to the paddle sport and forest therapy. Followed by a demonstration of basic directional paddling techniques and guided practice on water. The session aims to awaken the different senses, engage in nature appreciation and incorporate mindfulness activities to promote overall wellbeing.
