Part of parenting is perfecting the art of sucking it up. The author of Go The F*ck To Sleep and You Have to F*cking Eat, Adam Mansbach, captures how frustrating and futile it can be to reason with a child that has no reason for saying no other than for the fun of wielding their mighty power. Sometimes it’s better to choose your battles and just give in.
But as Dana Grossman, a lawyer and mediator who specializes in teaching negotiation skills here in Singapore, points out, learning when and how to negotiate with your child is an important skill for parents to learn. And she’s going to help us do just that at our FREE HoneyKids Asia x MumRadar talk: Negotiation Skills For Families on Thursday 26 March in the lovely surrounds of the new Tanderra Club.
How is it that we’re in a position where we need to learn how to negotiate with our kids anyway? Perhaps we’ve forgotten what’s it’s like but with time on their side, nothing to lose and knowing exactly who to bargain with, kids can very easily go from having less than nothing to having half of something. It’s clever really:
Child: I want a pink unicorn
Parent: They don’t exist
Child: Can I watch TV for half an hour then?
Parent: No
Child: I’ll stop asking for a pink unicorn
Parent: OK, you can watch 15 minutes then it’s bedtime
Child: OK
If you’ve been the victim of these simple tactics, then it’s time to acquire some tips from Dana. Not only will she share the art of negotiation for parents, she’ll throw in some bonus info on dealing with partners and siblings too. Now there’s a win-win.
While Dana spills her secrets, kids can make use of the Tanderra Atelier. Simply get in touch with the helpful Tanderra booking staff and secure a spot for your child at $15 per hour in this stimulating space. You can skill up and mingle with other mums hands-free! Don’t miss the Exclusive HoneyKids Asia offer from Tanderra as well.
Space is limited so make sure you RSVP!
