Helping our kids overcome anxiety is an important topic, especially in the time of the Covid-19 pandemic. In this HoneyKids Talk, you'll get expert tips on understanding anxiety, and how to help your kids overcome it.
Do you have a child who — no matter how calmly you explain yourself and the situation — is still quashed with worry, to the point that it’s affecting his or her everyday life? If so, then you’ll know what it’s like to have an anxious child. Having a child, especially a young child who is experiencing anxiety, is tough for many parents because children still have a difficult time verbalising what they are experiencing.
To top it off, the Coronavirus pandemic has had a huge impact on our kids’ mental health. We’re now living in a world where face masks are the norm, homeschooling comes and goes, routines are disrupted, and uncertainty is all part of the parcel — it’s been difficult for our kiddos. While studies have shown that kids have been spared from Covid-19, there’s no doubt that their mental health has been affected.
For children, anxiety is the most common childhood psychiatric condition. These disorders start early, by age four and by adolescence, one in 12 youths are severely impaired in their ability to function at home, in school and with their peers. So how do we help them deal? Here’s where the experts come in…
How to help your anxious child
How can you tell if your child has anxiety? How does it manifest in younger children/teens? When does it start? And how does it impact them? How can we help them overcome it?
Experts such as Educational Psychologist Angela Wigford from Dover Court International School and Singapore American School’s Kindergarten Counselor, Deanna Williams will teach you coping strategies such as calm breathing, stretching, art and written expression. They’ll also explain why dealing with anxiety at this stage of your child’s life is so important, and of course, the effect the pandemic has had on anxiety.
