Get curious, dream big and harness the power of science at the Singapore Science Festival (SSF)!
Parents, we’re not going to lie: it was a tough challenge to keep the kids’ minds engaged over the circuit breaker. But if there’s one thing we’ve learned, it’s how cool and fun science can be. Well, don’t let the learning stop! Celebrate all things science, technology, engineering and maths at the annual Singapore Science Festival. From 25 July to 8 August 2020, go on a virtual journey to experience, engage and explore the power of science. Want to find out more about this exciting festival for kids? Read on below…
Empowered by science
Jointly organised by both the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) and the Science Centre Singapore, the Singapore Science Festival is back again this year with more than 30 interactive events and activities. For the first time in two decades, SSF is also fully digital this year – that means you can access the plethora of activities anytime and anywhere!
And the theme of this year’s festival? Empowered by Science! Let your budding scientists get curious about the limitless possibilities science has to offer, and how they can harness the power of science for themselves. Whether that’s inventing plant-based meat or finding ways for humans to live on Mars… anything is possible.
Activities galore
Curious to find out what activities the Singapore Science Festival has to offer this year? Here’s a little teaser of what you can expect:
1. Science Buskers Festival
Besides hands-on experiments, we’ve learned that informative and engaging videos are a great way for our kids to learn more about science. Enter: the Science Buskers Festival! This show-and-tell competition is a great way for your little one to express their creativity of their chosen science topic. Here’s how you can participate: from 30 July to 5 August, vote for your favourite video via the SSF website. The winners will be decided based on judges’ score and audience votes, so check out the videos and vote your favourites now!
2. X-periment!
Ever wanted to discover the many exciting fields of science? Check out X-periment!, a science carnival jointly organised by A*STAR and the Science Centre Singapore. You and the kids will get to learn more about the latest innovations, developments and research from A*STAR research institutes, tertiary institutions, private and public organisations right from the comfort of your own home!
3. David Price’s Science Made Simple
Over the course of three weekends, go on a learning journey with science busker extraordinaire David Price! Watch as he shows you the secret science of water and sound in the most unexpected places, live from the UK. You won’t want to miss it! So, make sure you sign up and mark these details down to know when you can join in on the fun!
- The Wonders of Water, Sunday 26 July, 2pm-3pm
- Science in Unexpected Places, Saturday 1 August, 2pm-3pm
- Music to your Ears, Saturday 8 August, 2pm-3pm
4. Games and Quizzes
Challenge your friends and family to a game of trivia with specially curated hands-on activities! Take a thrilling adventure through different stories to uncover the mysteries of nature, chemistry and maths. The kids can play games like Guess the Scientist, Guess the Invention and try to Escape the Chemystery Lab, or learn more about vaccines during this Covid-19 era and hop on an adventure with Wallace and Walnut. Fun times ahead!
5. Science Whaaaat?
Looking for more hands-on experiments to try at home? Check out the Science Whaaaat? videos! From making your own foamy elephant toothpaste to building an indoor hot-air balloon, these series of fun and informative videos will get the kids excited and asking questions.
6. Virtual record-breaking activity
Last but not least, join SSF’s live-stream on Saturday, 8 August from 4pm to 5pm, where it’ll be attempting a new record in the Singapore Book of Records for the “Most number of people doing a science experiment together on an online platform”! Prep for the record-breaking attempt with these materials found at home. Think: plates, straws, milk, dishwashing soap, food colouring or ink and a cotton bud. Psst, you’ll want to sign up for this!
We can’t wait to join in the festivities at this year’s Singapore Science Festival – don’t miss it!
