Imagine if your child could spend five days learning to combine a bunch of skills to solve problems like murder mysteries and rebuilding robots destined for Mars. Imagine they could do this in a slick but friendly space with amazing facilities. Well, you probably know where this is going, and it’s all good. Yes indeed, The Keys Edge is offering a menu of holiday camps that is nothing short of astonishing.
If your child is a budding tech genius or business mogul, this is their chance to get a head start on things. Or, if you’re just keen for them to try out skills that aren’t easy to teach at home, these camps will make for a welcome change of scenery (and impressive scenery at that!). The thing we really like about these camps is that the focus is on creative problem-solving. Kids learn through very hands-on projects that are connected to real-life skills, so this is not just another day at school. The lessons draw from various disciplines, so while the challenge might be to solve a murder mystery, students tackle it by combining science, maths, and communication skills. We hear there’s a brand new CSI: Episode Two camp coming in July, so just quietly, we’re getting a head start on gathering clues. Wink wink, nudge nudge.
The camp topics really are phenomenal: there’s even a ‘Mini-MBA’ program for kids aged nine to 11 and, starting this July, a ‘Mini-MBA: Little Tycoons’ program for kids aged six to eight! Here they’ll get to write a business plan for a niche market in Singapore, and present it to a panel of judges (just parents and the CEO of The Keys; Donald Trump’s a tad busy these days). Kids aged eight to 10 can join the ‘Silicon Valley 101’ camp and design a consumer product using 3D printing technology, then learn the ins and outs of marketing their products. For the youngest group, the six-to-eight year-olds, there’s programming basics, creative writing for animated stories, and design innovation (think building and programming robots, not designing the play room’s colour scheme!).
If you’re worried that this level of learning might be difficult for young children to put into context in their everyday lives, fear not. Each of the camps has an expert guest speaker to help the kids connect what they’re learning to a real, live person and situation, and field trips also help them join the dots. Not only that, the programs give kids a fantastic opportunity to learn presentation skills and practice public speaking through sharing what they’ve achieved during their time at camp.
With such a unique offering, we have a feeling these camps will be in hot demand, so you’d best be quick! Check out the full selection of camps and register here (psst: gather a few friends, because groups of three or more each get 25% off).
