Trust us: You won’t want to miss out on the fun that’s happening at this year’s CIS STEAM Fair!
When it comes to making learning fun for the kiddos, the Canadian International School STEAM Fair has it well and truly sussed. Our advice? You need to have this FREE event – happening at the CIS Lakeside campus on 3 February – on your radar, stat! It’s full steam ahead when it comes to its big and bold activity line up, but we’ll let this video from last year’s CIS Steam Fair speak for itself… And once you’re done, our quick round-up of what’s happening on the day will definitely have you rushing to register! Hold onto your hats, parents, it’s an action-packed ride!
What is STEAM?
Before we get started on the awesomeness that is the CIS STEAM Fair, you’re probably going to need to know what it’s all about. In a nutshell, STEAM is an interdisciplinary teaching approach that stands for Science, Technology, Entrepreneurship (or Engineering), Arts and Mathematics. It encourages kids to make connections between these five disciplines while giving them the life-tools – creativity, self-belief, working as a team and thinking in a dynamic way – to pave their way to success in the real world. Genius.
From the smaller students to the ‘we know it all’ teens, students at CIS benefit hugely by engaging in exciting STEAM projects that happen right across the school. But if you’re keen to know more, then do make sure you catch one of the CIS Leadership Team or STEAM ambassadors at the fair who will be only too happy to impart their expertise on this amazing teaching method.
For the younger learners…
If you haven’t checked out the CIS Outdoor Discovery Centre yet, here’s your chance! The ‘lil ones are definitely NOT going to want to miss this outdoor learning and exploration space! CIS understands that little learners are at their happiest when exploring and creating, so the chance to build a giant spider web using twine (along with a dash of imagination), or an ice sculpture masterpiece with giant chilly blocks and food colouring, are definitely going to be a kid-pleaser during the fair. Add in a mud kitchen perfect for introducing early maths skills (without them catching on to our edutainment trickery) and you’ve got yourself a host of activity winners. We’ve seen the kiddos in action here. And yes: we want to be young again!
Older learners…
Older children are also in for a treat with a fantastic line up of uber cool activities. Imaginations will take off when the kids are let loose developing their own electronic devices, learning coding skills using a Sphero (a pretty snazzy robot ball!) and flexing their pyrography talents by burning designs onto wood and leather objects (not the desks or your handbag, don’t worry). Building a giant T-Rex with kid-appropriate construction tools – out of cardboard – seals the deal!
And the whole family
Cooked up a storm in the mud kitchen, brought to life a cardboard dinosaur, and untangled yourself from a spider web? Lucky for you, the fun is far from over! A global bazaar featuring over 50 stalls selling everything from funky threads and jewellery to one-of-a-kind gifts is a big pull for the grown ups, while the kids can roll up to the CIS carnival for rides and games galore. And did we mention there will be relaxing massage sessions by the lovely peeps from the Singapore Association of the Visually Handicapped? We’re so there.
Learning made super fun
Learning journeys have come a long way since we were kids (thank goodness for that), and all of the activities lined up for the CIS STEAM Fair give families just a peek of how this teaching method helps children develop a better understanding of how the world’s challenges are multifaceted and the thinking needed to find a solution must be dynamic.
Don’t forget to register!
Get in quick and book your spot at the CIS STEAM Fair – it’s a free event that’s open to everyone, and it could just change the way you think about how your child is learning.
