Got kids, will travel? It’s hard not to when you’re living in Singapore, where it’s super easy to jet off to cool destinations. But when the clock is ticking and hotel and ticket prices are rising as we get closer to December, it’s easy to get nervous! That’s why we’re grateful for travel concierge Changi Recommends for making planning holiday getaways way easier AND affordable. And, as a perk for HoneyKids readers, the peeps at Changi Recommends are giving you a 20% discount on hotels – whoop whoop!
Now for the fun part – deciding where to go! We consulted three uber travel-savvy mums for tips on the best places to take the kiddies this holiday season:
Ubud and Nusa Dua, Bali, Indonesia – Amy
There’s no doubt about it, I’ve got lots of love for Bali. After all, it’s only two hours away by plane. And, although Bali might sound like a teeny island, it’s the complete opposite – in fact, it’s almost eight times the size of Singapore! There’s heaps for kids to do and each city has its own distinct characteristics that people can’t get enough of – and that’s not even talking about the beaches! From hipstery surfer town Canggu and five-star resort central Nusa Dua, to artsy hippie enclave Ubud and chilled-out Sanur, you’ll never run out of things to do.
Right now, I’m crushing on Ubud. I love the fact that it’s so lush and I can’t get over #villalife. Not to mention the cool artsy vibe. As for my kids, they go wild for the Ubud Monkey Forest and the cute birds at the Blanco Museum! For somewhere to base yourselves, try Ubud Heaven Penestanan, a 4-star villa that’s within walking distance to the Ubud Traditional Art Market. We love the fact that it’s surrounded by rice fields, so you definitely feel like you’re on holiday. If hotels are more your speed, I like the Tanjong Benoa Beach Resort in Nusa Dua. It’s right near the Moon Cot Sari Turtle Farm where your littlies can learn all about their shelled-friends. And of course, nothing beats amenities like a full-service hotel spa and even babysitting/childcare services! Yas!
Koh Samui and Chiang Mai, Thailand – Jana
Apart from being home to my ultimate favourite food in the entire world and being super-close to Singapore, Thailand has always been at the top of my travel-with-kids list. You have your choice of powdery white sandy beaches in Samui to the rolling green hills in Chiang Mai – pick your pleasure! For the culture-vultures, Chiang Mai is always a popular choice. You also get to hang out with the elephants at Patara Elephant Camp! Stay at De Chai Colonial Hotel & Spa – it’s right in the heart of Chiang Mai and just a 15-minute walk to the Tha Phae Gate and Chiang Mai Night Bazaar. Don’t forget to bring a sweater because it can get quite chilly at night, especially in December. If warm and sunny is what you’re after, Koh Samui is your best bet. It doesn’t have the crazy nightlife that Phuket does and instead offers a wholesome family vibe my little tribe loves. If you’ve got a scuba-diving cert, Koh Samui also boasts some of the best diving spots in the world. If you prefer villas, check out Kanda Residences Pool Villas. It’s near the famous Chaweng Beach and Choeng Mon Beach – score!
Hokkaido, Japan – Mabel
When I think of Hokkaido, the first thing that comes to my mind are the great memories I’ve made with my little family. It’s one of the most kid-friendly places I’ve been to and a great place for bubs to learn how to ski or snowboard (there are lessons for kids as young as two years old!) or even just have fun in the snow! And trust us, nothing’s cuter than seeing your cherubs all rosy cheeked and watching them enjoy their first Hokkaido ice-cream cone! Our fave thing to do? Going reindeer sledding at Niseko Village. You also can’t go to Hokkaido without trying an onsen, which is why Yumoto Shiragane Onsen Hotel is a great choice. There’s lots to see in the area, too, including Shirogane Hot Springs and Shirahige Falls. We also love the fact that the rooms are all traditional Japanese-styled rooms, complete with tatami mats and futons.
