White Room Studio shares how to get the most out of your photo shoot
Gone are the days when having family portraits taken was a once-a-decade cringe-worthy event. No more do you need to regret that choice of sweater for the next nine years (unfortunately, we can’t say the same for passport photos). These days, thanks to the abundance of great photographers who shoot in a candid and natural way, you can regularly capture precious moments as your little ones grow, without incurring huge costs. The award-winning photographers at White Room Studio specialise in an informal, documentary-style that delivers beautiful results. They’re also very adept at dealing with infants, toddlers and children who don’t like to sit still or freeze in front of a camera. Here, they give us a few tips for creating perfect family photos with ease, and even enjoyment!

1. Pick a controlled environment
While we all have visions of stunning sunset beach shots with our fam, the reality is that the kids will run into the water within the first 30 seconds, and be covered from head to toe in sand another 30 seconds later. Remove all risk of potential disaster by opting for a controlled indoor environment. White Room’s fine art studio is set in a nostalgic colonial shophouse in River Valley, overlooking Fort Canning Park. It gives you the look and feel of being outdoors with an abundance of warm, natural light, and different creative corners for that cosy, intimate shot. You won’t get all sweaty and uncomfortable either.
2. Choose a photographer you trust
Selecting a photographer that will have you all feeling relaxed from the get-go is THE secret to producing perfect stills. White Room Studio photographers, Melody, Dan and Elaine, are consummate professionals with a knack for getting the best out of people in front of a camera. They’re dynamic and fun, and willing to get down on the ground or up a tree with your adventurous kids. Anything goes in the pursuit of a frame-worthy image!

3. Keep your look clean and simple
When it comes to styling your tribe for the shoot, think ‘less is more’, and you’re on the right track. A good rule of thumb is to wear neutral, ironed, lint-free clothing and leave behind loud busy prints and vibrant fabrics. Nails and hair should also be neat (no neon polish), as you don’t want the viewer focusing on anything other than your radiant faces!
4. Eat!
We all feel a little on edge with an empty tummy. Avoid the sugar-low tantrum (not just from the kids), and everyone will look and feel great. It’s also a good idea to pack some snacks for a mid-shoot refuel, but no sticky chocolate!

5. Look for an award-winning studio
All your prior prep won’t count a jot unless you land on a studio with accolades to back it up. White Room Studio is well known not only for its high-end glossy photos, but also for its raft of impressive awards. They’ve received the Singapore Entrepreneurs’ Award 2013/2014, among many other trophies.
6. Special offer for HoneyKids readers
It’s lower on our list of criteria for sourcing a good photographer, but cost is definitely a consideration. The attractive prices that White Room Studio offers won’t leave you worrying, and they can work with you to tailor a package. Right now, HoneyKids Asia readers can scoop up their most popular Studio Collection package for $290 (usually $390). The Family Portraiture Studio Collection (up to four pax), includes a one-hour studio session, three 5”x7” prints and one 8”x12” print. Or for the expectant mum, the Maternity Portraiture Studio Collection involves the same photo shoot and prints, except your blooming bump is the star! With both packages you’ll score high-res digital images that are perfect for sharing with friends and family online. Beautiful photography for a fraction of the cost – winning!
